No, it was the childs mistake for making a fake gun, whether it be a drawing, toy, or pastry, he still had a fake gun, and was obviously pretending for it to be a gun, otherwise teachers would not have taken notice. It wasn't about other people's mistakes, it is about the kid's mistakes.
They are not making things better by bring more and more attention to school shootings. More people are going to contemplate them if anything. They are just putting the idea into more peoples heads.
"Closing your eyes doesn't make it less real" --- Just ignoring the idea and reality of school shootings and violence in workplaces and schools won't make it go away, the best way to make it go away is to make the reality of it known, to teach about it.
If we were to forget the second world war and the genocide involved in it, we would only leave ourselves open to that happening again, because we'd forget the power a political leader has, etc etc.
Once we forget something like that, we leave ourselves vulnerable to it happening again. Shit will just happen more and more, and although making it known to students, etc will not solve all of the problems, and school shootings will still occur, but enforcing the idea of not having anything related to guns in schools is one of the first steps to decreasing the possibilities of school shootings, etc.
Yeah, whatever.

I'm not sure who is worse, the teacher or the student. Get that kid in some sculpture classes, goddammit, this is just sad.
That's one of the stupidest things I've ever heard of.

I still don't get why people are supporting this.
I'm 16 and my elementary school years weren't that long ago and we did shit like that all the time yet this kid gets a SUSPENSION for it.
This is EVERYTHING that is wrong with society.
The fact that bad things happen and society tries to stop it by doing all the wrong things
i.e blaming shootings on video games

This story is bullshit.
Instead of suspending the kid why don't you make sure his parents and teachers teach him good values and morals? Teach him that guns are capable of doing bad things and that there are bad people out there instead of just IGNORING it.
The world is fucked up and you can't just IGNORE it.
This is why society is so fucking stupid. They just try to ignore everything and find the easiest solutions. Its no wonder so many people commit suicide. So many useless health professionals and psychologists who really don't care about the people they are meant to help. Instead its the VIDEO GAMES that are to blame. Lets all blame VIDEO GAMES that is much easier to blame right? Mental health is too hard to tackle isn't it you morons
we live in a society that goes for the easy solutions and no longer cares about intellectualism and rational thinking. We live in a society that would rather blame video games and try to ban and shame them rather than teach children good morals and help people with their psychological problems.

Shit, I go and stick my thumb up and my index finger out and everyone starts crying how I pretend shot them to death in a psychotic pretend rage on the playground. "Don't worry kids, just remember to fear everything and everyone." Lovely teaching there.
It's kinda funny though, my mother is an elementary school teacher and her whole district is considering allowing their teachers to have guns, even encouraging it. Can't say I mind considering teachers have extensive background checks anyways. Although then again some teachers become sexual offenders, so I'd say maybe just a tazer or something.

I thought this'd be about junk food being banned?
If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.
Like I said before, anyone supporting this kind of behaviour is the kind of person who is distracting attention away from real danger.
You know how people get all paranoid about who the next school shooter is going to be? Maybe we should be concerned about who the next paranoid idiot is going to be. It's times like these where I think maybe the victims of these mass murders are no great loss, if they belong to the same species as these people.

School discipline is a joke.

In all seriousness, though, all you guys blaming the teacher and calling them stupid have no idea how school systems work. Every single insignificant thing that even vaguely hints at the slightest possibility of an incident has to be reported, because rabidly litigious parents will jump at the chance to sue the teacher and/or the school for anything and everything that could possibly go wrong. Teachers have no choice but to be very careful to take even the silliest things like this seriously, in order to prevent the possibility of a lawsuit.
And the school had to follow through with the punishment because they likely have a strict "zero tolerance" policy against bringing weapon-like objects to school. Which again, exists to make the school as lawsuit-proof as possible. It's a vicious cycle of inanity that everyone is partially responsible for, except for the people who are ultimately hurt most by it: the kids.

Exactly. Finally someone posts a rational response instead of kneejerk misanthropic bullshit.

Yeah, im a mighty huge fan of poptarts myself, so i'd probably beat the shit out of those morons too. Kid was just playing with a poptart... :(
I'm of the mind that we should teach children everything there is to know about guns, what they can do, how they're used and what consequences can come of it. I believe that gun ownership should be a commonality among students and school staff and students should be taught specifically how to use the firearm in question in a shooting gallery built into the school.
The possession of nuclear bombs during the Cold War caused every party to restrain themselves from engaging in infantry combat. It's possible that arming everybody with the same weapon could assure people restraining themselves from attacking each other.
Mutual Assured Destruction.
Of course there are obvious issues with this suggestion but if the people preaching that this suspension is a good idea can have their bowl of idiocy then why can't I? Just because you're being taught something doesn't mean that you either understand or even care. At worst it makes you wanna do it more because you feel like you're being condescended to and you want to prove that their methods of teaching are pure garbage by doing it anyway.
Either way, you could debate that this punishment is more like an award because he doesn't have to go to school for about a week.

Are you fucking kidding me. What the hell kind of bullshit is this? Teachers are ignoring the real problems, the real bullies, the children who may actually have psychological issues, and are instead focusing on kids playing with pretend guns? How about instead of punishing people for not understanding the morality of sensitive topics such as these, you explain to children why real guns are bad and can hurt people. I don't see people complaining about kids play-fighting with each other, I don't see people having issues with kids using sticks or toy swords to fight (Beyond the obvious fact that hitting each other with sticks isn't exactly a good idea in the first place), I don't see people punishing kids for watching those cheesy action movies. I see people complaining that children will copy anything they see, that by including guns in fiction such as filmd and video games they think it's alright. Well, maybe if you would bother to teach kids about why violence is wrong instead of cracking down on things like video games and not actually bothering to explain everything? Punishing a kid for making a gun out of a poptart is not going to make him realise guns are bad, it's going to make him think you're a bunch of pricks, because punishing children does not teach them why these things are wrong. I didn't learn to distinguish what was good and bad because my parents and teachers punished me for every little thing, I learned my morals from people who were reasonable enough to try and teach me them.
