Hardware Daw Or Aaw? Mar. 3rd, 2013 @ 09:25 PM Reply

Hi there. I was wondering if any of you used Hardware DAWs or AAWs?

I recently went from an old Tascam portastudio to Teenage Engineering's OP-1. I love it and I love everything about it and I wish more things like this existed.

It costs less than Ableton Live Suite, and if you factor in the price of the computer, it costs half as much.

Most of my NG and Soundcloud submissions were made using a Yamaha AW2816.
I've got Cubase now. It's pretty good, but not nearly as much fun as the Yamaha.
I'm seriously considering switching back.

Hardware would be extremely extensive to completely replace your software. All the software I load in my DAW wouldn't even fit in my room. I'm not even talking about the costs. For the common musician it's much more realistic to use a DAW in combination with whatever hardware you need and have the money for. I just have a computer with a DAW an audio interface, and some instruments plugged in.

No joke, I traded my pair of shoes for an ol Korg M1. FUN AS SHIT. I accidentally broke the mod wheel though and I'm still drunkenly mad about it.

I'd trade my shoes for a Korg M1 with all 61 keys broken. An M1 module is still 10 times as expensive as the shoes I'm currently wearing.

DAWs? Nah, Notation programs FTW! :P

I really like the hardware notation program... it's called the "Piano with blank score paper on top 2000"... only trouble is, the note input takes a while and playback is pretty sucky, so that's why I switched to Finale.

All my audiophile friends go crazy for some good aged paper played in a hardware notator... I've never really understood it myself, but they go crazy for it!

I hear the new version of Finale will support lossless manuscripts, though

Friend of mine bought a BOSS 8 Track a long, long, long time ago. Playing around with it was an extremely fun experience.

It is a good start. Introduces you to mixing. Handy when you are tracking live drums or just live sets in general to be able to quickly mess with the levels.

Check it! :) //// Never stop making music. Play MOTORJOUST!!!Check it! :)

It also costs less than a car, that doesn't mean I can afford it!

I already thought about buying it as it is quite sexy, but I fear that I would only use it to toy around, not for "serious" projects. I have that problem with most hardware I own. I end up using my DAW and maybe one or two of my controllers only although I would have more possibilities. It's just the easiest and fastest way for me. Whenever I do something with hardware, be it my Gameboy, I have fun for a few hours, but I never produced a song that way. I guess the same applies for the OP-1 in my case.

I'll rather get Ableton Push instead.. probably

I don't use this kind of hardware for serious projects, actually. I use it for just toying around and being inspired. Anything I field-record or create on it, I import into Ableton Live, which is what I use to mix and master, and what I use for all professional jobs.

Paper and pencil doesn't make sound. Some people prefer or flat out need to hear what they're playing as they make it. I can write a song on pencil and paper, but I can't feel the song on pencil and paper.

You could use tuning forks on the side.

Tuning forks will help you hear the pitch, yes, but not the velocity, frequency, timbre, body, anything. These are all things to take into account when creating music. Average joe might not know the difference between a cello and a violin in frequency range.

Honestly I'd probably use both a SW DAW and a HW DAW together, would make my process probably flow a bit better honestly.
