Thought of that, but I enjoy using raw samples.
Thanks for the help a lot, I'll look into that now.
Making chiptune is more fun than I'd imagined. Once you get a good melody going, everything else just seems to gel in so well.
Does it matter if the song loops or not? What is preferred?

Take a quick re-read of the rules, and there's also a little plot chart that Bill provided ;)
Finished 4 songs for this competition. They're not bad, but none seem likely to win me anything. All are loops, which isn't a pre either. That can be changed though, by adding an intro and outro, and perhaps some variations. I have a nice melody and chord progression for a fifth song, which doesn't seem to be going to become a loop. Hope that one will work out this time.
Just a quick question. Can I submit a song into the contest that I have done already? This song has been on the audio portal for a long time now, and I think would be a perfect fit for it.

You have to compose and create a brand new song for this contest.

Things are explained here. ;)
Is there any bias against loops?
..

Depends on what you are referring to when you say "loops".
If you mean making your entry a loop, then you shouldn't do that, because there's a plot chart for you to attempt to follow
If you are referring to duplo loops, then no, you are not allowed to use those.
JUST A FRIENDLY REMINDER
To stick to the time limit as best as possible.
Remember that the winning song will be ideally 2-3 minutes because of the requirements of putting it to an animation. ;)

When we say 8-bit music, we automatically think about music produced by an 8-bit video game console (because that's what's meant most of the time). There are however other 8-bit musical instruments not intended for video games. You could call music made with those instruments also 8-bit music.
Btw, did you know that even though the snes was a 16-bit console, the audio cpu had an 8-bit core? So you could call snes music 8-bit as well.
Actually, can we get a judges call on this? Is 16bit acceptable? It says video game as well as 8-bit so as long as it's basically the 8 - 16bit age?

From the main thread
- He is very much interested in using music that could be described as "8-bit", "chiptune", or even "videogame" in his next big flash project, as yet un-named.
also
- You are also allowed to submit songs that aren't strictly 8-bit but still portray a strong video game element / feel, such as this example: I got this great idea, it'll be one tone for 4 seconds! and maybe a white noise hi hat at the end.
hi
Hi everyone. You might like my 8 bit tunes, please check out my collection.

You have to enter a newly composed song fitting the rules, then post it in the contest entry thread.
I just realized that my song is almost identical to the optional plot outline provided. Cool!
making a fairly simple-ish (more like uninspired) track but FL's crashing on me.
ffffffffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
are we free to submit our tracks to bandcamp, soundcloud, myspace, your mom, etc. during the contest, or should we wait till after it's over?

You are free to put the song on other sites.
Would be cool if you put down somewhere that it was made for this contest, and provided links to this contest and NG ;)
Just thought I'd chip into this discussion, and say that you guys are all doing an amazing job! I've gone and listened to I believe all the entries as of this post and made reviews. I am enjoying the competition, and hope to see much more submissions before March 30! So if you haven't submitted yet, get in there!!!! Don't worry, the water is fine!! (Although maybe a bit cold)

I'm not sure if Famitracker works for Mac, but I'd definitely give it a try.
