He only really wanted to help people, and to be the hero. But over the course of his journey, he committed numerous war atrocities, went insane, deluded himself into vilifying a dead man, and in one ending, was gunned down by his own rescue party.
Not really related, but that totally reminded me of Red from Penumbra. Also, Alexander from Amnesia also has it pretty rough. Torture people or never see the love of your life again? Not an easy choice.

John Marston spent his younger years raping, pillaging, and murdering. When confronted with his past, he shows more remorse for his wife and kid being taken away than he does for his crimes. The game is more about him deciding to put his past behind him, believing he is absolved from his previous sins only because he's turned a new leaf. In the end, SPOILER he realizes that he cannot escape his past, and instead gets what has been coming to him for a long time.
Having said that, Galuf from Final Fantasy V had some pretty tragic moments.
A truly tragic character in my book, has to be Gabriel Belmont, Reason being, he killed his own wife, under manipulation of a man he considered to be his best friend then had no memory of it, then Satan was actually the one who manipulated Zobek in the beginning. Then when Satan is defeated he gets to see his wife only to have her in the end tell him up front she knew what was happening and didn't want to tell him for the fear he wouldn't go through with saving the world, only to leave him in sorrowed and angered silence. Then to really kick it off, to save the world a second time, He has to give up his humanity to enter the realm of darkness, becoming Dracula himself, and slews the forgotten one in the process.

Hal Emmerich from MGS( various ). He was abused as a child, his sister was murdered, the one woman he actually starts to fall in love with kills herself sort of in front of him. The same woman was partially working with the man that killed his sister and then he gave the same dude a mercykilling.
Also, kenny from the walking dead.

Mario and Link. I mean, my God; they've been saving those damn princesses for the past twenty to thirty years and they still haven't gotten any. The most either of them have gotten is a kiss on the cheek.
