Penalties For Quitting Feb. 20th, 2013 @ 01:03 AM Reply

The most recent game I've been playing is Playstation All-Stars Battle Royal, and the online is great, but I seriously can't get through one game because I always "lose connection" with the host, but really just rage quitters and people trying to save their score. That's the problem with have stats and win streaks in some games, especially fighting games, so many can't handle a loss in their precious little score, it really just ruins the online experience, and they do get away with it because there are no penalties for quitting.

I know I'm just ranting, but I think there should be penalties for people rage quitting, such as an automatic loss, or losing a chunk of points. Should there be penalties for future games? Are there any games out right now that have penalties for quitting?

There should be. I see no point in trying to keep a perfect score. You are going to lose sooner or later, just get over it and accept it.

Halo and Call of Duty have probation features for quitters.

Halo had this until Halo 4, if you left you would have xp taken away if my memory serves me correct, leave too many times and you can't play online fr at least 10 minutes minimum.

- Team Fortress 2's Mann vs. Machine mode would leave players searching for games longer if they abandoned their teammates before even completing a wave.
- it's been mentioned before, but Bungie's later Halo titles would penalize XP points in ranked matches if players left early.

Yeah, it's a touchy issue. I think the lack of penalties often has something to do with developers realizing that sometimes real life has to step in, and they don't want to penalize people for that.

I remember my brother mentioning this used to be pretty bad in Fifa, but now quitting will lead to an automatic 3-0 loss if you were losing at that moment (if I remember correctly). Still sucks for people who actually have something important to attend to all of a sudden, but at least it reduced the amount of rage quitters.

I think it might also be an idea to register on people's profiles how often they've quit a match (next to wins and loses). That way it's easy to see whether someone is a rage quitter or not.

Oh that's right, Xbox Live has/had a "leave feedback" option, with one of the negative feedback options being "left early". However, the only person that can see this percentage of negative feedback is the owner of the account.

I don't like that. If something causes your connection to get lost, then you would get wrongfully penalized.

The problem with this is that if you have to leave online for a real life emergency or something like that, then it would be treated as a loss, even if you were ahead or you were so close to the end of a level or mission. Since it's impossible to judge intent in online gaming, having a loss on a record just because real life happens to step in and there is nothing they can do to stop it, or let them at least finish the level isn't right.

If you want to weed out the rage-quitters, then maybe have a win-loss-quit ratio on the profiles, so that you can tell who's been rage-quitting and who's not. Most developers assume that people quit online because of real life issues {it's mostly naive to think that, I know} so they don't penalize gamers for quitting, which is why an opt-in opt-out system is so popular in games today.

Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.

This used to happen to me all the time when I still played LoL. Played on a crappy computer that would occasionally crash during games, and I would get banned for it. While I believe people who do rage-quit should be penalized, I can also see it harming people who don't.

League of legends automatically bans players after quitting a certain amount of games in a set time frame. Nothing worse than someone quitting/going afk causing your team to be outmatched in team fights.
