Need help with computer... 2013-02-13 20:55:08 Reply

I have been trying for quite some time to get my laptop to boot from a windows disk but I keep getting a "NTLDR is missing" error- YES I googled it. Every time I put a disk in a still get the error.

Does anybody have an idea as to what I can do?

I would appreciate help with this.

Have you tried turning it on and off over and over again? That should fix it

Boot from a Windows disk? Are you trying to install an operating system?

Indeed. But it seems as though when I try to boot another OS it gives me the same error.

You need to put your computer into the boot menu. Your current OS should have instructions of some sort, or look it up, I believe the way to enter the boot menu varies on OS. Or iy could be in your computers instruction booklet (if you still have it).

You should be able to install the new OS from there.

This. I think your BIOS is trying to boot your HDD. You need to change the boot options to load the CD/DVD Drive first.

And like sweet21 said, there's also usually a Boot Menu, so you can manually decided what to boot.

Might be something wrong with your CD drive. I bought an old computer once with a drive that didn't work, it sounded like it was reading the discs, but it wasn't, it didn't recognize them at all. If you have an external reader, try plugging that in and see if it works, or installing via USB (though maybe you won't be able to install Windows that way, you could try with a small linux OS though, just to see if the CD reader is the problem).

Check your bios (press anything from DELETE to F2 to F12 while your computer is showing the manufacturers logo) for a boot priority setting. It should be CD(or DVD) drive, and then the hard drive, not the other way around.

If it still isnt working, check to make sure the drive activity light turns on while you are using it. Also, check the disc.

If it STILL isnt working after that, go into the boot menu (press whatever you tried that didnt bring you into bios when the manufacturers logo is on) and manually select the CD or DVD drive. After that if it still isnt working, take it to a professioonal.

I know, NGers actually trying to be helpful, amirite?

Probably won't work for that specific error, but it's worth a try anyway:

In the BIOS, if you have FAT32 set, change it to NTFS and try again. Or if it's the other way around, switch them over and try it that way and see if you still get the same error.
