If you don't play guitar then I can see how you would think this way. Even if you do play, kudos and all, but I think you're way out of line. Every great band at least does a few covers, and most fans of the original are always butthurt.
Personally, I don't know how a guitar player can become a guitar player without wanting to cover his favorite songs and learn from his idols.
When it comes to being original, there really isn't much left to do on a guitar that hasn't already been done.
Like, who is probably one of the most original and best guitar players on the radio today? Most of it is watered down versions of yester-year. You know, it's hard to be original, creative, totally artistic, and at the same time be commercially successful. Who alive is really doing this right now? Maybe Jack White. Not saying I'm even a fan, (he does have some cool stuff) I'm just saying he is probably the closet guitar player on the radio as of right now, new music, that sounds original, and artsy.
Too bad Kurt Cobain blew his brains out. That guy didn't give a fuck what his label said. His full creative control and the power he had when he was alive probably made him the last true famous rock star who wasn't this totally contrived thing paid for by mainstream labels.
Any people you see today have been polished and given a wardrobe and back up dancers. It's pathetic, but I guess they don't want another suicide on their hands signing an unknown. Today is all about the grease of marketing muscle and growing rock stars in a petri dish.
