Games that didn't age well 2013-02-12 16:35:11

Recently I purchased Sonic adventure 2 on steam because it was a game I loved as a kid, but now Replaying it I just find it to be average at best with a lot of tedious parts (knuckles/rouge). Has this ever happened to you guys?

To me, the most notable example of games that haven't aged well at all are the first generation Pokemon games.

I admit that they're still playable, but the sprites look really ugly at this point, the games have a quite a number of weird glitches and there are a couple of parts that are such a drag to get through (Mt. Moon, the Rock Tunnel, Victory Road, etc.).

Even if I would want to play them just for nostalgia I think I'd rather pick up the GBA remakes.

I love Sonic Adventure 2 but I have to admit that the first game aged better than the sequel did.

Dragon Warrior NES. At level 15, need 3000 xp to level up, strongest enemy gives me 33 xp. This game the game for you to develop patience but at the cost of going insane

I still think that they're great fun to play and I like the old designs for the most part. There are a few horrible ones and a few that shouldn't have been changed as much.

Tekken 1 I completely agree with. Tekken 2 I still find to be the best in the series in terms of roster and gameplay.

It stands up a lot better than most modern platformers and is more enjoyable than the DS remake.

Tale of Enki: Pilgrimage, an RPG with a few twists. Available to buy it on Steam here!

I believe most Rpgs do test your paitence seeing as the battles are kind of meticulous.

Disagreed with that one.

I admit that the bright polygons they used don't look as good now as they did at the time, but I reckon the game is still very good. The controls are still easy and fluent, the camera isn't that much of a bitch and even nowadays I still have fun with collecting all the stars when I go back to it.

There are number of sprite designs in the gen 1 games where it just seems like they didn't get it right. I remember Machop and a few others which just didn't match with their anime/Pokemon Stadium models.

The sprite designs came first. You mean Pokemon Stadium/anime didn't get it right

Oh I see. Well in that case they made a bunch of rather ugly models for the game and thankfully, they improved them soon after.

To be fair most of these were always problems with the game and didn't come from aging. Plus there's plenty of mods to fix most of these. I never had a problem with the leveling, I think it's pretty forgiving especially in comparison to Fallout 2. Never had a problem with the time limit either, unless you wander around the desert you can easily get the water chip in time. There isn't much to do until then anyway.

As for the companions, I don't think they require micromanagement at all unless you're trying your hardest to keep them alive (they're all supposed to die before the end of the game) and they stop being helpful about half way through anyway.

The biggest problem with Fallout 1 was and still is NPCs blocking doorways.

At 2/12/13 05:38 PM, BigBadtheBazz wrote: Tekken 1 and 2, and maybe tomb raider.

Tekken 1 is a bit bare bones, but I think Tekken 2 is still pretty great. Tomb Raider has definitely aged like ass but we've got Anniversary now.

I always thought Sonic Adventure felt like ass, now more than ever.

Goldeneye 007, Final Fantasy, Star Fox, Metroid II.

Every 3D game made from 1991 to 1997
Game boy Pokemon games (if only for the graphics)
Call of duty MW2 and all the COD games before then
Counter strike 1.6
Max Payne 1

I'll probably think of some more but here are a few off the top of my head.

Deus Ex. A great game for sure, but the visuals are really bad. When you pick it up these days it really stands out.

The cartoon aesthetic stopped it from getting to screwed over completely, but I think Spyro did much much worse.
The game is still fun though but way too easy...

Quest 64

Yes, it does suck, but when I was but a wee lad, I kind of enjoyed it. Looking back at it now, it is a bad game and did not age well. You could win the game by acquiring the barrier and using it all the time, which made you invulnerable to magic, which every enemy uses. Leveling up certain stats was annoying and tedious. I would say it is an RPG that has not aged well at all.

Morrowind
Silent Hill
the first Turok
the Sega Genesis version of Virtua Fighter 2
Nightmare Creatures (it's still okay, but not as good as I remember it)

At 2/12/13 05:38 PM, BigBadtheBazz wrote: Tekken 1 and 2, and maybe tomb raider.

The first Tekken has definitely aged badly, but I think Tekken 3 is still the best one of them all and it's still great.

Just because the graphics don't compare to today's games doesn't mean they haven't aged well when it comes to Gameplay. Perfect Dark, Mischief Makers, and Kirby 64 are still extremely fun to play.

Super Mario 64 still has it. :) All the games that tried to be graphically superior in addition to 3D didn't make it though.

Same thing with PSX.

I can think of a few games such as Firewarrior and Dungeon Keeper 1, but the main one would be Castlevania: Simons Quest. While it wasnt even remotely good to begin with since they were trying something new with the game, its even fucking worse now.

Perfect Dark has aged poorly though, the framerate of most N64 games make them unplayable today. The XBLA port is still pretty good though.

Time hasn't been kind to a lot of PS1 games. Many of them are hilariously bad by today's standards. Only a handful like Metal Gear Solid and Crash Bandicoot are still as great as they were.
