I think it goes to show that the world is in a sad hopeless state as of late.
Also that they should try getting some younger people with hopes for popes.
I think the Catholic Church needs to clean up the bulk of it's corruption it has hidden over the decades and further more they need to start seeing Religion as a Private Club of Loyalty & Devotion, further more they need Women Priest within there ranks and eventually a Woman Pope.
Should the Catholic Church refuse to accept such changes, the Catholic Church in turn is destine to dissolve by nothing more and nothing less but it's own hand and that alone will come to pass should they refuse to cleanse the corruption that plagues that church.
I'm relatively indifferent about all of this.

I was disappointed when it cut into regualr programming as breaking news and didn't turn out to be about the Chris Dorner manhunt. Like we give a damn.

Not going to happen considering the church have been around for a long time, if it does dissolves, the main sect that survives would be considered the Catholic church itself.
Reforms would help but you never know anyway.
The resignation is where it gets interesting because there was a prophecy where the pope after Benedict would helm the beginning of the end times.
It's a long story.

I think it is amazing, since such a thing hasn't happened in 595 years.

As an atheist I find it hard to care although it has to be said that this man was in the Hitler Youth and I heard he thought that condoms help spread AIDS. As far as religious leaders go he wasn't one that'll be remembered forever for his good deeds. I say this because of what I can recall of Pope John Paul II he was at least a kind and caring man even to those that disagreed with him.

Doesn't the impending doom and desperation reveal itself as a hallucinogenic vision when one of the worlds most dominant religious icons suddenly steps down from his throne?

That's kind of a misnomer. He had to be in it legally, since the program was obligatory for German youths back then. He wasn't actually in the field killing Jews or Allied soldiers, he was training at a seminary at the time.

My apologies, I was unaware that it was mandatory. I guess it just an embarrassing part of that generation of germans life. I guess he wasn't going for head of the jewish faith either so at least it's not ironic in that sense.

Naturally I didn't think he was on the front line, even he's not that old.

It says Catholics don't need an old dying man to be their spiritual leader until he passes. And while I'm Christian I'm not Catholic, I wonder how you retire from being the vessel for the word of God.
[Insert altar boy raping joke here]
You're so retarded, not only do you have down syndrome, you have up, down, left, AND right syndrome.

The role of the pope has changed over the last 100 years. Now you have to fly all over the world and constantly travel. Not exactly a well suited job for a man approaching 90 years old.
As an atheist, I find catholicism to be only one of the moderately offensive sects of christianity. The cover-up of the pedophile priests scandal was terrible, for instance. But overall In catholicism there is less extremism (more willingness to compromise), less young earth creationism (most doctrine seems to revolve around a divinely guided creation of the universe over billions of years rather than a six day creation-fest), less violent paramilitarism (McVeigh, Branch Davidian, Jesus Camp esque stuff), and less rejection of evolution than in sects such as the baptists.

Good question. You'd think that you don't. With this, I wonder if it'll become socially acceptable for popes to change career and religion etcetc..
