Question on copyright 2013-02-11 06:08:56 Reply

Hello, I'm new here so I apologise if this is the wrong place to post this.

Rules say that if you upload a movie you must be the creator of its contents.
What I did not understand is whether using copyrighted music is allowed or not.
e.g. An actual song from a famous band

Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english, I'm not a native speaker.

Did you create the song? No? Then it is to be assumed that you are not allowed to use it. Either way, typically it is better to ask permission from one of the audio artists here on NG to use one of their songs instead. The purpose of the audio portal is to give animators a source of music so that they won't get in copyright trouble.

It's OK to use copyrighted music under special conditions, such as educational use, parody, fair use/not for profit personal use or with permission from copyright holder. Plenty of submissions do use copyrighted music, but it's still a bit of a gray zone. If you have the option free music is always a better choice, such as the tracks included in the Audio portal, or covers of famous tracks. If you do include copyrighted content, be sure to give credit!
