To be accurate, it isn't cool to pretend to have a psychosis, it's generally frowned upon so I doubt anyone ever does it to gain popularity. The only reason people do it is either because they want to be treated at a higher capacity than other people as well as be able to do shit that's unacceptable in an otherwise context or it's because they want to be regarded as geniuses, which in the latter case they're not trying to mimic the full psychosis at all, only it's positive qualities, hence all the people on the internet claiming to be high functioning Autistics while disregarding the notion of actually getting diagnosed by a doctor.

No, having a mental illness is not cool.

I only have one kind of mental illness (maybe two, but the second is not confirmed), but I don't go bitching about it because I know it's negative. I just keep it to myself and feel a bit proud to be different than the general population - but still, a lot of basic skills are hindered.

I dislike people who pretend to have a certain mental illness. It's no respect towards those who actually have said mental illness.
