The ATH-ES55 I ordered arrived just now. Needed a headphone to use with my PSP and PMP. My AH-D2000 are so damn heavy and the 2 meter long cloth wire is clearly overkill for this. I didn't want anything expensive either as I really love the sound of my HD600 and I don't think anything closed-back would rival it.
This is my first supra-aural headphone, so I was shocked by the size of the earcups. They're an absolute beauty though. The earcups are shiny with a wooden texture and have a thin silver lining around their circumference. In the middle is a finely printed Audio-Technica logo together with the model number. Sexy.
The headband is plastic with a rubbery feel to it. Seems pretty solid.
Comfort is better than I expected. There's quite a bit pressure exerted on the ear, but so far it's all good. I doubt I'll be able to wear these comfortably over the course of several hours though.
This is the most isolating headphone I have, which isn't saying much. I can barely hear the keycaps bottoming out on my Filco keyboard. I was aiming for some isolation, not complete, so I'm content with this.
Now It's time for some listening!
