There are way to many franchises to pick just one game. Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, Dragon Warrior, Shining Force, Phantasy Star, etc.

Apart from ^, it's definitely Golden Sun. Second place: Breath of Fire.

Very nice choice. Have you played the third game? I was wondering if it was worth a purchase or not.

It was Final Fantasy VIII, but Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch may be taking over that spot.

Not yet, but it looks promising. I'll probably get to it eventually.

The first one was great despite the stupid water meter thing. You have to keep drinking water. I dunno if they got rid of that in the second one, but I've been meaning to get it.

He just said it's his favorite game, and you ask if it's any good.

I don't play a lot of RPG games, so I'd have to go with Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. Super Mario RPG and the original Paper Mario are also great.

By saying that you "only" have a PS3, it means that you have a wider array of RPGs than just about any of the other consoles with an exception for PC games. There is far more beyond Skyrim (which, in all honesty, isn't that good on the PS3).

FFX and Valkyria Chronicles (Strategy RPG count?) are both way up there in terms of story... Mass Effect franchise... Dragon Age franchise... and I'm just gonna throw Disgaea in there too...
... I can't choose just one.
FFX and Valkyria Chronicles get bonus points because they are a couple of the very few games that have managed to make me cry. FFX mostly because of the absolutely amazing soundtrack, and Valkyria Chronicles because... someone dies and you can't avoid it... you get attached to those characters when you spend the entire game giving it your all to make sure they come out of battle alive.

Oh... and Tales of Graces F... that's the only game I've ever played all the way through (Including the post game-game) without touching any other game.
100+ hours without playing any other game... I was hooked. So only makes sense I add that too.

Gotta go with Chrono Trigger or Tales of Symphonia. Fun times abound.

The Elder Scrolls Oblivion was a fun experience, especially with some of the better mods that were available for it.
