I'm not sure about this one...if I do decide to participate, then maybe I'll actually get finished this time around and not develop writer's block.

This sounds fun and interesting, I always enjoyed the freedom of morphing the story without having to fear about it being seen as a bad thing. I'll try my own hand at this idea, will be a very fun thing to write.

Are we allowed to write it in script format? Not like I'm going to, just weighing my options.

I think this would be really fun, especially as a first contest for me(or a first anything, I made this account like 3 years ago and I only start using it now). I have looked at some writing contests in the past, but I felt too overwhelmed with actually writing a story. I like how the theme is nice a loose, and a fun one to play around with.

I hope somebody is entertained by my story.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic, but yeah, focus will be more on innovation that quality. With that said, a good writing that is also innovative will most likely win by a long shot. Maybe we'll have a "Most Innovative" award, who knows?

Yes! You don't even have to stick to any conventions. Invent your own genre if you're that creative! As I mentioned before, you could literally tell a story in the form of a power point presentation (splitting it into these "slides" with a man explaining maybe? That sounds boring, but that depends on how *you* write it) or maybe you can tell the most fantastic, fiction story using language commonly found in scientific journals.

I just had this idea. Someone could submit a story, written in correct programming syntax, such that it would actually run when compiled, but at the same time, it could tell a story that would be easy to follow for a non-programmer. (I'll pretend I never said this idea)

Also, palindromes are fun. Maybe the letters and words wouldn't be the palindrome, maybe the events of the story are the palindrome! A cyclic story? Food for thought!

Im goimg to doing a power point, and it will be sort of a graphic novel with pics and some sounds. Is this cool?Im not taking credit for the pics or song. Is this ok? Also, are the any regulations with power point or is it about the same as normal?

Just made a rather short entry as I didn't feel like doing something enormous for this. I kind of wish I did a spell and grammar check.

Damn you, Newgrounds and your inability to edit your posts!

The transition from Word to here did not work well...
And there was no way to know that until after I had pressed post.
Any chance that won't cost me points?

I'll just copy paste my reply to your PM:

The problem with that is that adding pictures and music shifts focus away from the literature. As this is a story writing contest, you'll be judged by the quality and creativeness of your story. A graphic presentation might be a bit jarring. You can still do it if you really want to, and it will be accepted, but I wouldn't recommend it.

When I mentioned presentation I was thinking something like:

Slide 1
---some stuff
---the presenter talks
Slide 2
---etc..

How you make that exciting depends on you!

Good luck!

You won't be disqualified or lose any points. Although as a tip, you may want to post your story as newspost on your userpage to edit it before you submit. Newgrounds has this problem with apostrophes which they will be fixing eventually.

Wow, participation is much better this time! We're just a few days into February, and we've already got as many entries as the last contest. Needless to say, that means I have no chance of winning (ha ha), but I'll *try* anyway.

I still haven't got an idea. I've considered writing it in pseudo-code, but I fear that non-programmers won't understand it. :(

It'll be accepted, although I think submitting a "regular" story to this contest wouldn't really suffice unless you did something super creative with it.

I would advise you to try something new.

Also, some inspiration, this piece was submitted I think 2 years ago on the forum by ZeeAk, and I enjoyed it:

Maaaaybe it doesn't have to be syntactically correct. Maybe it's an interactive story!

GET CREATIVE PEOPLE

And I seriously think at least someone should give some form of palindrome a shot. Sound like an awesome challenge

Hello my name is The-Great-One, I am the chief editor of The Interviewer here on Newgrounds and an amateur writer. I will be one of the judges of this Monthly Writing Contest. I've been reading the entries so far and I like what I see so far. I can't wait to read more entries, this is certainly an interesting theme to go off of.

Wow people, you're keeping it so short... I think I'll really need all the time to write/finetune my story and even then I think I will still spot things I'd like to improve. I guess we'll see which one turns out the best. Good luck to those whom have not yet placed their stories, I hope you'll have fun (and maybe win a prize ;) ) I'm quite intrigued by our first judge, tbh, so that's some more inspiration to work with, haha.

Man, this was really fun to type, I'm looking forward for next month's. Switching between genres was a great idea, going from adventure to film noir to magic.

I've read some of the entries and I just love some of the other stories on there, and it's very interesting seeing how this topic was used differently.

I'll be posting mine soon after I finish spell checking and the such, can't wait to read more!
