It is an art, there is technique, and there is a correct way to do it. Doing it wrong results in screwing your voice (possibly permanently).
And it's not something you should just "do on your own, see what works"... Because I guarantee it's harder to scream properly than you seem to think it is. If I had a dime for every time someone came along and just assumed, "It's screaming, it's not that difficult"... I'd be rich.
As mentioned above, "The Zen of Screaming" by Melissa Cross is a great place to start, those DVDs will teach you proper breathing, control, and of course, proper screaming technique. All of which is safe for your throat and vocal cords.
