The Most Ridiculous Law of 2013 (So Far): It Is Now a Crime to Unlock Your Smartphone

BY DECREE OF THE LIBRARIAN OF CONGRESS

IT SHALL HENCEFORCE BE ORDERED THAT AMERICANS SHALL NOT UNLOCK THEIR OWN SMARTPHONES.

PENALTY: In some situations, first time offenders may be fined up to $500,000, imprisoned for five years, or both. For repeat offenders, the maximum penalty increases to a fine of $1,000,000, imprisonment for up to ten years, or both.*

This is what happened:

During George Bush's administration, Congress passed a law called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which basically judges that all electronics connected to the internet are part of the public domain. On October 12, 2012, the Librarian Of Congress decided that it was worded in such a way that unlocking any SmartPhone or tinkering with certain electronics you have bought could be declared illegal.

And so, on Jan 26, it will be enforced. Unlocking a SmartPhone (iPhone, Android, etc) for use on another carrier that it is not programmed for will be punishable by fines ranging from 500,000 to 1,000,000 and five years in jail.

Sign the WH.GOV petition to stop this madness. We must remove the DMCA, which is being used to harass people.
