not sure if they would even be good in the long run.
Yes but overpriced and with a lot of flashy shit.
You're better off building your own, price wise. If money is no object and you really don't want to build your own for some reason then go for it.
Just a chick with a dick.
From what I've heard, they're decent gaming computers, but overpriced. You would probably be better off buying the hardware yourself and building your own computer (apparently it's not that hard, but I've never done it).

I've thought about building my own. Is it possible to build a laptop?

Same
I'm afraid I can't do that, Star Fox.
Do a barrel roll.
There meh. They used to be more top of the line but times have changed. There more or less a slightly better "apple" of the computer market. flashy as fuck, name brand over priced, but better specs for what you are paying for than if you got a mac.
You can build something that looks just as nice and has -even more power- for the same if not less money.

that sounds amazing actually.
If you don't want to build your own, definitely the way to go. Having said that, they are still overpriced

Alienware, like all other PCs are more versatile when compared to apple. I know this isn't the debate but Alienware stands out for a few reasons. Most PC towers are set and ready to ship, Dell does this with most of their computers. Alienware however has a customizable feature similar to a Mac Pro (yes, the tower). And being a PC it is much cheaper and much better. I recently did a top-line comparison. With Mac Pro you can have up to 64 GB of RAM, that's it. I'm not even going to go into memory or graphics cards, because what you ask for is what you get and you're stuck with it. Alienware only lets you order a tower with 32 GB of RAM, however, it comes with more ports, and all the old customizable features any PC Tower allows. Alienware also lets you choose to have say one 1TB HDD and 512 GB SSD. Also upgradable after purchase.
Alienware is probably the easiest solution. Also after adding all the specs to top performance and top price, Mac Pro comes out as 14,000 and Alienware at 7,000, with the only exception of Alienware having starting out with 32 GB of RAM. I know you don't need all this power but it's the principle for sure. Also there is room for the nVidia GeForce 690.
Now something with 64 GB of RAM would only be for someone wanting to say host a Minecraft server because of how much coding is inside the game, it requires that much.
Alienware is my dream machine, I would go with it. Also they look bad ass, and you can customize the color.
Why are you idiots talking about?
Build your own computer? That's ridiculous.

I forgot to mention that I'm thinking more about laptops. Should've put that in the title...
But anyway, thanks for all the details.
They are alright. By that I mean they clearly run well(although this has nothing to do with Alienware themselves, considering all the hardware comes from other companies.. but I digress), but they are very very overpriced.
Also some of the builds make no fucking sense, ie an i7 with a gtx 660 ti. In this case you have a huge overkill of a processor that'll only be bottlenecked. Logically you would put more money into the graphics card than the processor if you're playing games... but non-tech people tend to look at the processor and judge the quality of the computer from there.
So I would say you should learn to build your own. In the end it'll benefit you more; you'll be more likely to be able to fix it on your own, you'll save money, and have a better build.
You can make better computers at a tenth of the price of an Alienware computer. Youre paying premium for the price like Apple, except that with Alienware you actually get a computer worth using. Still silly though.
If you know someone who knows a lot about computers, tell them what you usually do with computers and then run through what you want to buy and the reviews for the components online. Once all the pieces have arrived pay them something nice for assembling it and helping you and you just saved several hundred monies.
if you dont know someone who knows a lot about computers then find a shop where they custom build computers for people and talk to them about it or something

This is actually very good advice. I'll probably end up doing this, because the Idea of a custom machine that I got the parts for sounds badass.

Its also very cheap.
Just make sure the pieces are all correct because computers dont go together like lego as much as I would like them to. The people at the store would know if they have any experience whatsoever though. Looking for a small computer store that also did repairs would be a good idea for that since the people would definitely know what they are doing.

What do you mean by this?
Anyways, Alienware is pretty good, it's overpriced, but hey, if you don't want to build your own computer, buy one of them. I wouldn't call it extremely expensive, compared to other companies like Falcon Northwest or the Republic of Gaming line from Asus.
sup.

I mean paying premium for the name.

So what you're saying is that you pay for just as much for a Mac for the name and the alien head on your PC?

It would be cool if they came with an alien head.
But what I was saying is that youre paying far more than theyre worth because of the brand and not the quality or price of manufacturing.
When I was looking into getting laptops I noticed that Alienware specs were about as good as (or worse in most cases) than the XPS line, and at the same time Alienware was still way more expensive. I think even XPS laptops are pretty expensive, but I ended up getting the 17, so whateva. But you can definitely do much better I think. If you're looking into a desktop computer try http://www.ibuypower.com/Info/Revolt/. If you want a laptop I guess Asus? I dunno though.
Sheld0r uses it, so it must be swagger.

This. I bet you could build your own pc that is have the price and more powerful
Retail tower PCs are overpriced pieces of shit with customer support teams outsourced to India, specially things dealing with Dell.
So, no, they suck salty donkey dick.
Build your own.
WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THAT DUDE WITH THE RED HAT BROWN TRENCH COAT AND SHOTGUN?!?! I miss the old ASSASSIN days. Click Me
When I looked they didn't even offer the 690GTX. I thought they claimed to be the highest of the high end.

7/10
No, Alienware are actually quite terrible for their price point. You're always better off building your own PC. It's quite easy and the cost effectiveness cannot be matched when comparing quality of components to price.
As for warranty, components will always have a manufacturer's warranty and if you look around you can usually find companies who give good warranties for quality components that are not too expensive.
Currently I'm going to be building a HTPC for a client and hopefully if my client base expands enough I can finally quit my job and build PC's and sell PC components as my primary income.
Gooch for MOD 09'

Yes, true, but let's not forget about service. It matters because if you have good service, the product will arrive fast or on time without any damaging, but with bad service, the product could arrive late and probably will be broken, and you'll have to send it back to get it fixed, only to have the same problem again and again and you won't actually be able to use your computer in 3 months.
