I don't know if it's just me, but I've been following the events of the 'Event Horizon Telescope' for some time now, eager for those fuckers to get those telescopes lined up and start taking some photos of some sexy black holes.

For those of you who don't know - We, as humans, have never taken a direct image of a black hole. Everything you've seen in regards to them are either X-Ray Emissions or Generated Simulations.
We know where black holes are - however; they're either too small, being in the centers of galaxies they're surrounded by millions of stars, or both.
The Event Horizon Telescope is a project however, by using telescope arrays all across the globe. They plan to combine their power and generate an image (to start with) looking similar to what is detailed in the link above.
I'm excited as fuck for these results, we won't actually see a black hole, but we'll be able to see the point in which light no longer is able to turn back from it's gravitational pull.
Carl Sagan and Einstein would be so proud.

We aren't. I can't imagine how gathering a basic understanding of the universe around us is 'playing god'.
However; the research of the Universe around us is detrimental for the survival of our species as a whole.
For various reasons, the Earth will, at some point in the future, become inhabitable.
Our sun will expand as it begins to run out of Hydrogen Fuel and as it's surface comes closer to the surface of Earth, not only will the temperature of Earth rise, but as a result of that, for various reasons, the possibility of life on our planet won't exist anymore.
Sure, this is billions of years away, but that's not the only issue we face on our humble little planet, such as usable resources.
So, it's important that we, as humans, begin each day by finding a means to lead ourselves to other planets that we can use for resources and potentially live on, and each bit of knowledge about the universe around us brings us another step closer to that.

To put that in perspective. Since the beginning of man kind till now, we're only 1/2000 towards 1 billion years. We'll be sending our kids to the hyperspace-bus by the time earth becomes inhabitable. Not saying technological advancements are overrated or unnecessary, but I figure if you see what we've accomplished just the last ten years, I'd say we're on a good, steady course.
As for the black hole itself, I stumbled upon this a few days ago, thought I'd share it.
