I want to animate a character in flash, but the classic tweening is driving me nuts! is Motion tweening better for character animation?

don't know too much about motion tweening, and that's (i think) because classic tweening is meant for almos all 2d animation in between needs. I think you should double check your keyframes and your timeline. let me know if you are still having problems after looking at that and i will help you via skype or somethin!
You might want to check this out Jazza is very good at tutorials look at some other ones to see other stuff.
