How do I get rid of Writer's Block? 2013-01-26 02:33:54 Reply

Well, I make a series on YouTube called "Anti - Gman Squad!" and I am writing in the 4th episode of the show. I can't think of any thing! So being this is the "Writing" section of the NG Forums filled with cool writers and potential teenagers in 1st World Problems writing poetry about their goddamn iPhone 5s, I thought I would ask this question. Nothing can get me to write a single joke in.

Ah, writer's block. The very bane of existence. When I encounter Writer's Block, it usually due to one of two things:

1. I'm bored.

2. I'm afraid.

1) is caused by losing interest in your work, the moment when your feelings change, your inspiration whiffs out, when you really, really don't feel like working on it and you barely even think about it anymore. If crafting your work no longer holds any joy for you, then there's no point to continue it. Unless you're making money off it, it's best to leave it be.

2) occurs when you really, really think you've got something going that can make your work shine like the brightest star in the sky, but the thing is, you are unwilling to commit yourself fully into the work. Either you don't want to put in the effort, or you're afraid of messing it up. Basically, a case of cowardly laziness. When this happens, the simplest solution is to avoid procrastination. Remove all distractions from your surroundings, and set aside some special time during the day dedicated solely to crafting your masterpiece.

In any case, I don't think Writer's Block can be simplified to something as simple as, "Oh I can't think of any ideas." This only happens when you're not committed to your work 100%, and that in turn is caused by 1) and 2). Solving the roots of the problem can lead to its solution.

Anyway, that's just only my own personal take.

When I got outside, the purple fog was spreading. I covered my nose and mouth, and ran home.

Walk away. Do something else for a bit (If you have the time. If you have a deadline this might not be feasible). Don't think about it for at least a day. Read a book, watch a movie, play a video game, whatever, just get your mind off your story or your jokes. You'll feel refreshed afterwards and it'll come more naturally.

Best way to get past writer's block is to just start writing something. Get your brain working in that direction and eventually you might get a glimmer of creativity. I do work that requires hours and hours of my week, though, so I can't afford to just stop writing until inspiration hits me like a meteorite.

Go find a friend and bounce ideas off of them. Get them to contribute. Chances are, all their contributions will suck, but you'll be able to get the headgears turning and think of something cool off of what they say. Basically, twist their words to your liking. I do it to my other half all the time. Like so::

YOU: This is my thing and I'm stuck for ideas, help me please?

BOB: Well, what about if they were all zombies and killed each other?

YOU: That's a stupid idea. It'd be better if the zombies banned together and killed everyone else. Fuck yes. Thats a great idea. I'm a genius.

That's why most people have writing partners.
