Do you use a computer at work? Jan. 24th, 2013 @ 02:18 PM Reply

Hello, and thank you for reading this. I just have a simple request for my "Introduction to Computer Science" class. My instructor, Dr. Scott Rosen, has assigned me to interview someone who uses a computer at their job and I figured that I would find more level headed people of the type I am seeking in this section of the forums. Your help would be greatly appreciated, because I really can't do this without a volunteer.

I have the interview questions listed below, and if there are any problems you have with a specific question, then just don't answer it and I will BS that part of my interview project.

1. Describe the tasks or purpose(s) for which you use the computer.

2. What software do you use most often?

3. What were your reasons for choosing this particular software?

4. What do you like about this software?

5. What do you dislike about this software?

6. Would you recommend this software to others to do a similar task?
Why or why not?

7. How long have you been using a computer?

8. How did you feel when you first began using the computer?

9. Describe in what way your original feelings about using the computer have changed or not, and why.

10. What training or education or other kinds of help did you get in learning to use the computer?

11. Looking back on your own experience, what training or education might you recommend to others who are just starting out?

12. In what ways does the computer make what you're doing easier?

13. In what ways does it make what you're doing more difficult?

14. Overall, what are your views about the growing use of computers by so many people?

Thank you!!!

1. Describe the tasks or purpose(s) for which you use the computer.

Coding, e-socialise and entertainment.

2. What software do you use most often?

Eclipse, Visual Studio, Notepad++ and Firefox.

Firefox is probably the most used.

3. What were your reasons for choosing this particular software?

(I see a flaw in this questionnaire)

To view websites.

4. What do you like about this software?

It's ability to render mark-up in a satisfactory way.

5. What do you dislike about this software?

It's javascript engine is a bit slow.

6. Would you recommend this software to others to do a similar task?
Why or why not?

I would recommend it.

7. How long have you been using a computer?

20 years or so.

8. How did you feel when you first began using the computer?

I remember being annoyed that the keys weren't in alphabetical order.

9. Describe in what way your original feelings about using the computer have changed or not, and why.

I suppose I originally viewed computers purely as an entertainment device (I had an Atari ST as my first computer), not really appreciating their full capabilities. It wasn't really until I was 15/16 that I become more in awe of what a computer can do. That passion sat with me for a long time until 3 years ago when I said "screw it, I'm going back to uni to learn this stuff for real".

Bonus story:

I remember taking my computer to a "tech guy" in town when it broke down, he charged me £20 to blast some compressed air into my graphics card. I was so annoyed by that, I taught myself how to look after my own computer. I suppose I should really thank that guy, because if it wasn't for him I'd be stacking shelves for the rest of my life.

10. What training or education or other kinds of help did you get in learning to use the computer?

In terms of just using a computer, I'm self-taught. Google answers A LOT of questions.

11. Looking back on your own experience, what training or education might you recommend to others who are just starting out?

Just play around. A mistake is a lesson learnt and knowledge gained. If you really are terrible at using a computer, I suppose an introductory class could be useful.

12. In what ways does the computer make what you're doing easier?

Programming is quite difficult without a computer.

13. In what ways does it make what you're doing more difficult?

The fact that I have to programme stuff.

14. Overall, what are your views about the growing use of computers by so many people?

The more people using computers, the better.

1. Describe the tasks or purpose(s) for which you use the computer. My whole business is run by a computer. I keep track of customer orders, emails, inventory, etc.
2. What software do you use most often? Open Office (mostly Calc), Windows Live Mail 2011, E2 Shop Tech, Chrome, Microsoft Works
3. What were your reasons for choosing this particular software? I didn't choose Works or E2 but E2 runs my shop.
4. What do you like about this software? It keeps track of everything related to what's going on out in the shop even though I don't use all of the features of the program
5. What do you dislike about this software? It'll crash for no reason sometimes
6. Would you recommend this software to others to do a similar task? Definitely and I have!
Why or why not? The software does everything orders, quotes, purchase orders, inventory, bookkeeping, payroll, shipping, etc.
7. How long have you been using a computer? 26+ years
8. How did you feel when you first began using the computer? It was so long I can't remember. Back then the computer was simply run on DOS.
9. Describe in what way your original feelings about using the computer have changed or not, and why. Technology has changed significantly. I remember when things were very simple, now things are quiet complex and can be complicated but still easy for anyone to use.
10. What training or education or other kinds of help did you get in learning to use the computer? I was forced to take a keyboarding class in high school but that was it. The only class I took was HTML and was forced to take Intro to Computer Programs or whatever in college, which was a complete waste of time for me but an easy A+.
11. Looking back on your own experience, what training or education might you recommend to others who are just starting out? I can't recommend anything because I wouldn't take a class.
12. In what ways does the computer make what you're doing easier? You can keep track of everything and have everything you need to know about everything at the touch of a button
13. In what ways does it make what you're doing more difficult? All of the garbage that can come with computer use like viruses, malware, spyware, etc.
14. Overall, what are your views about the growing use of computers by so many people? Computers are good, they've improved life but they've also stunted society in many other ways where social networking is now done via computer rather than one-on-one in person. It is also because of this that people don't know how to think on their own or solve their problems hence one of the reasons why society is as messed up as it is today. In an age of instant gratification, kids are being handed everything instead of going out and earning it themselves, so computers and various technologies have been detrimental for society in that sense.
