Actually, there is a pretty simple solution for that.
Duplicate the channel, add them to different mixer channels, have mute option activated in the peak controller, and when you need it, just turn down the volume of the channel that you didn't use the peak controller on.

There's a "power" button in the Mixer Insert that works just as well, I find it really doesn't make much of a difference in the mixdown.

Screw that, just put a Fruity Soft Clipper after the peak controller, turn the threshold down to zero when you need to, turn it to max when you don't. Less messy than duplicating the channels honestly, and does the same thing.

More on topic, I'm tired of having to explain the difference between being a Producer and being a DJ to people, and why I can't do the latter even if I can do the former.
