Not necessarily if it gets into a format war with Con-ray.
Lets see it is better higher quality noticeable difference
Blu-rays are cheaper then your normal dvd's so on.
Sure man, do whatever you want to do. You are making the choice in your life to go to blu-ray and whatever, just buy it if you feel that it is a good choice.
I prefer Blu-ray instead of DVDs. Blu-rays usually have higher picture quality and better sound.

Huh, I thought it would be Death-ray.
Hopefully science develops some sort of blue-ray eye surgery so you see everything in 1080p. then there would be no need to purchase expensive blue-ray movies that your going to watch a couple of times before it becomes a dust collector.

I wouldn't want that.
I don't want people fucking around with my eyes just so I can watch movies like that.

You do see the difference.
We don't all watch movies on a tiny phone screen, you know.

I.e. Netflix compared to Bluray.
But that's how it's always been I guess.
Yeah sure, buy every single movie that you want to see and then not watch them again for many years.
Also, new releases are expensive to get on Blu-Ray. That and most video stores (so you can rent Blu-Rays) no longer exist.
If your somewhat big on quality then yes, it definitely is. 80s movies especially look fantastic on Blu-Ray for me, but if your a guy who's fine watching a VHS copy just as much he is a DVD copy then you might as well not upgrade.
I don't know what those of you that say you can't tell the difference are going on about honestly. If you have a TV that can output 1080p how can you not be able to tell the difference between high def and standard definition. You guys are drunk. And Blu-Ray is getting cheaper and cheaper so why not. These things are expensive luxury items anymore.

But If you're a pervert like me then you don't have to watch just movies in 1080p...

I see your point.
But I still wouldn't want someone fucking with my eyes. I need them to see.
Looks like Blu-Ray may have a future in the 4K HD world after all:
"On January 14, 2013, Blu-ray Disc Association president Andy Parsons stated that a task force created three months ago is studying an extension to the Blu-ray Disc specification that would add support for 4K Ultra HD video."
Not sure what it means for existing discs though.
And if your DVD breaks, today... you shoulda got a VCR. Because I've never owned a Blu-ray, true say.

I literally JUST heard that line when I read this.....
you know what I'm talking about.

it's not like every movie is worthy of being bought/rented
when you watch 10+ new movies a week, it's not really feasible to buy or rent (physically) every last one
it would be a huge inconvenience and hardly worth it
people aren't watching 2001 in 240p or anything (at least, i hope not)
I personally only have blu-ray discs because I have a PS3.
There's no way in hell I'd ever just buy a blu-ray player.

an urban myth. in reality it's all in your head; you think it looks better because you pay more, it's called the placebo effect. it's impossible to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p, it's too negligible for the human eye to pick up on. next you'll be telling me you can see microbial life without a microscope. just like the difference between 720p and 1080p it's there, just too small to see
