Feel free to talk about the SketchSwap contest here. You may post work in progresses and ask questions here. DO NOT post anything other than final images in the submission thread. DO NOT post anything other than your name in the sign up thread.
The contest ends February 16th. There will be a check-in on January 26th to make sure all sketches are finished (to ensure no one is left without a partner)
Reminder:
Prizes will be given out as follows.
3 best pieces (final sketches) - $25 store credit
Best pair - $25 store credit for each person in the pair, this means if you and your partner both happened to kick ass.
There will also be some cool secret prizes given out for a few secret categories, but you cant win if you don't participate.
{{{{{RULES}}}}}
All pieces must be original, that means no fan art of any sort.
Don't sign up if you don't think you can at least submit a sketch for your partner.
Sign up thread for sign ups only
Only final finished works in the Final thread
Keep all other discussion to this thread.
The theme is: Beauty and the Beast
Word to your mother
For those of you worried that you might get a shite sketch or partner. Think about this.
If the sketch is awesome, then naturally your drawing will be awesome because you have pretyt much everything laid out for you. If sketch is crap, then you have more freedom to work with since there isnt much to go with.
These dont need to be carbon copies of the sketches. My piece was pretty similar to Riots sketch to show that you cna just do a polished version of the sketch. Riots piece was rather different from my sketch, but its still easily recognizable what its source material was, to show that you can get really creative with your interpretations.
Don't get discouraged just because your partner gave you a wimpy starting point.
This sounds like a fabulous idea for a contest, really fun.
I don't think I'll be able to participate but I'm excited to see what comes of it.
I should also mention that major brownie points (maybe brownies are a secret prize, who knows?) will be given for creative interpretations of the theme.
What is beauty, what is a beast? Does the beast have to be an animal or creature of some nature? Does the beauty have to be female? Can the roles be reversed? Will Fred ever admit his true love to Velma?
All good things to consider.

He obviously has a thing for Shaggy :P
So... are we supposed to start working on our sketch right now? ...and when/where do we post them? or do we send them to our partners privately and reveal them at the very end together with the redraws... like you guys did? What?! Ruh roh!!

You technically can start your sketches now, but some of you might want to wait to see who your partner is. Once partners are announced, send it to your partner privately and they will reveal it when the final piece is done. WIPs for the final pieces can be shown here for those who want to show that stuff, but we would prefer if the sketches stayed hidden till the final result.
So many people signed up... I was confused until I saw the cash prize!
But this sounds like a lot of fun!
Are we allowed to start our sketches now or something? My conscience is tearing itself apart over seemingly nothing!
A journey of a thousand miles begins with complaining
Question -
Can we do more then one sketch so the person we are grouped with can choose which one to work with?
Or are we keeping it 1 to 1?

since the sharing of sketches is done privately after our partners are given to us i would imagine that we are allowed to make more than one sketch as no one would know otherwise anyways
Thoughts in chaos...

Like I said above, yes technically you can start your sketch early since the theme has been announced, although it might be more fun to wait to see who your partner is so that you can possibly give them something more (or less) challenging if you know they can(t) handle it.

I cant stop you from making more than 1 sketch for them, but we would prefer if it was just one. Since the final piece can only be one final showing the sketch it came from per person.
my concern is that these pairings are not going to be made randomly, since both partners doing well is one of the criteria being judged it seems unfair if they are not picked randomly or if two skilled artists get paired together even in a random situation
how exactly is this being handled? I dont find it to be a fair criteria regardless of the way the pairings are handled, thoughts?

Of course its going to be random selected partners. Keep in mind we arent just judging on skill alone here. If two awesome artists get paired, but come up with uninspired boring pieces (that are technically well executed) they wont go as far as a lesser artist with one hell of an awesome idea and fitting execution. Appropriate style and creativity has much more value in this contest than straight up rendering skills.
let's say theoretically you get paired with someone who drops out without even submitting a sketch; is it then acceptable to sketch and complete your interpretation solo?

In this case you will either be paired with another person who's partner has dropped out, or will be provided a sketch from one of the judges.
*Raises hand*
say you get paired up with someone you absolutely loathe, would it be possible to change partners (Or would you rather the person to suck it up and stop being such a blowhard?)

if you ask me that'd make it ten times more interesting.

From the format of the contest, I don't think you have much involvement with your partner, other than the change-over of the sketches.
So once you get the person-you-detest's sketch, it's down to your magic touch from then on.
*delete this if I'm talking bollocks*
I'm kinda slow, so I have a question.
What so I do with my partner's sketch after I get it?
Do I 'finish" it with my wacom tablet, or what?
Also, how am I going to be informed on who I'm paired with?

When you get your partners sketch you redraw it as a finished piece. Keep an eye on the signup thread and this thread for the partner announcements on the 20th.

Ignore everything I just said, I just read over the rules again and my questions were answered.

Thanks for the help.
I probably should have just read the rest of the first post more carefully.
This happens when you only read comic books.

Because they were EXAMPLES and if you READ THE RULES and INFORMATION PROVIDED you'd know that much.
