Easter Eggs Jan. 7th, 2013 @ 11:06 PM Reply

Just about every game has easter eggs hidden throughout them. Whether they are cool or funny references to a famous movie, other games, or just something random the developers put in for the players to find. Name some easter eggs that you thought were cool, funny, random, or whatever.

One I found that I thought was funny was the Indiana Jones easter egg in Fallout New Vegas. You find a fridge with a skeleton inside it in the wasteland wearing a fedora, which was referencing the scene from Crystal Skull where Jones survives an Atomic bomb by hiding in a fridge. You need the Wild Wasteland perk to find it.

Jet Set Radio had a cool easter egg where one of the characters wore SONIC'S SKULL as a necklace.

Also, skull girls has tons of easter eggs but my favorite is Mike Z's badly drawn cat and Peacock bringing out various items like The gunblade and Buster sword from final fantasy 8 and 7.

The main one that comes to mind is the Secret Cow Level from Diablo II. Loved it.

Relating to that in games like Warcraft 3 you can come across items like 'Wirt's other leg' adding to the already existing Diablo 2 one, then of course Diablo 1 had it's own "Yes, it's a cow" comment when clicking a cow constantly, and taking on from that if you click any animal constantly as you did for a cow on Warcraft 3 the animal explodes. Then of course the Pony level in Diablo 3. It is nice to see a single easter egg of a cow comment in the first game branch out as far as it did. Most easter eggs are just 1 shot things.

I did love the Indiana Jones Easter egg as well. I also love the Easter eggs put into Rockstar games.
I love the Scarface Easter egg in GTA: Vice City where you find the chainsaw in the bathtub.
Another good Easter egg is the one in Doom II where you kill John Romero at the end.
The golden chicken is good in Gears Of War 3.
One of the best is when you hide in a locker in MGS2 and see the posters.

haha yeah. When I saw that, I thought it was a coincidence until I saw it listed on the easter eggs article on the Fallout wiki.

Are you talking about the Wolverine game? That seemed pretty cool. I played a demo for it and then I thought "Is this really the first thing featuring wolverine that actually has blood and gore?". I mean, there really should be an animated movie where wolverine tears the shit out of people and you see intestines and shit. That would be sick.

In Mirror's Edge, there were multiple easter eggs in the form of scribbles on walls and recorded messages that refer to a giant rat, and then there's also this.

Earthbound had a lot of nice easter eggs and references to things (most musical related):
-There's a very direct reference to Yesterday by the Beatles.
-Some music in the game takes samples from Beatles songs or so I've heard
-There's a Yellow Submarine in the Dungeon Man's body
-Some lines of dialogue reference titles of Beatles songs (Hello. Goodbye! Money (That's What I Want))
-The music theme when you fight hippies is heavily inspired by Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode
-Stonehenge
-Loch Ness Monster
-Dali's clocks
-The Runaway Five supposedly resemble The Blues Brothers
-The song the Runaway Five perform in Fourside sounds similar to The Doors' The Changeling
-A few David Bowie references (Diamond Dog, Starmen)
-The Skyrunner theme sounds a lot like the opening of Won't Get Fooled Again by The Who

That's all I could find, but there's probably way more.

Those old RPGs had large amounts of such references, especially when it came to the naming of characters in such groups. Take Chrono Trigger as another example which used the names of several rock stars like Slash for Magus' henchmen. Apparently Japanese producers at the time found it strangely amusing to keep making references to the music of the western world in their games.

Have any you feel like sharing? I'll have another go. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. If you save and quit at the part you are stuck in a cell and then continue the game, you get to play this demo of another game that was never made.

Me neither, in all my playthroughs I didn't discover it. I've found that in a lot of games that even if you've played it through multiple times you'll still end up missing loads of cool secrets.

Ha, I have a few:

Super Mario Galaxy 2:
- In Shiverburn Galaxy, when getting 2 of it's 3 main stars, in the background are odd figures staring at you from a distance. You can never get close to them, as they are a part of the backgrounds texture. When someone hacked into the game and looked at those files, the background was called "Beyond Hell Valley" with the creatures being called "Hell Valley Trees".

Super Mario 3D Land:
- If you look in the Binoculars in World 1-3 for long enough, you'll see a spaceship warp in and out of the sky for a few seconds that looks like a spaceship from the original Super Mario Land. It may also be a shout out to Super Mario Galaxy/Galaxy 2.
- In world 4-4, before touching the flag, if you stand along the gate, an odd figure will appear from the trees. It looks like a Mii, or maybe Slenderman, but it's faint, and you need to look hard to see it.

Also, Conker's Bad Fur Day had lots of film references:
-The opening with Conker on the throne is a reference to a scene from A Clockwork Orange
-The hay boss is inspired by the Terminator.
-The landing scene in the War chapter is a reference to Saving Private Ryan
-One part of the War chapter is called Saving Private Rodent
-Conker's helmet is similar to pvt. Joker's helmet in Full Metal Jacket
-The code names of the weasels are the same as the code names in Reservoir Dogs
-The dogfish destroying the pier is from Jaws
-The lobby scene in the bank is from The Matrix
-The final boss is the alien from Alien

It makes sense for Earthbound since the whole game is basically inspired by Western culture.
