Common use defines the dictionary, not the other way around. The role of the dictionary is to inform, not dictate. You can use it however the fuck you like, Shakespeare just straight out made shit up.

I've had it pointed out to me that in the past, the word "awful" used to mean something that inspires awe. Now it doesn't.
Words evolve over time, so what those dumb kids of today think is likely to be correct in the future.
I don't think awesome has to imply good, just large, eventful or epic. WW2 was awesome. That earthquake is awesome. But obviously the word has since changed meaning.
