For free DSK overture is pretty cool.

I have Garritan Personal Orchestra and its not bad(130$). I've seen Step do some pretty amazing things with East West orchestra(99$-500$ depending on package).

If it's only strings you want, you may want to look into EastWest / Quantum Leap's Hollywood Strings instead. Another good alternative would be Cinematic Strings 2.

If you have money, you'd be much better off buying something of acceptable quality like something from EWQL or similar. You may be interested in Native Instrument's plugins too.
Even if you don't have money, DSK is definitely not the best free orchestral plugin out there, you're better off with soundfonts, even.

Yes, some SoundFonts sound really good. I remember a guy here uploading a whole collection, that was like 3 GB.
Anybody got the link for this guy?

Session strings is my favourite, $99 for a solid string library. LA scoring strings is the best one Ive heard but reeeally expensive

Indeed, LASS is fantastic. Session Strings is ok in some cases but if you need sordino strings it will NOT work for you.
Also, Miroslav Philarmonic is kinda sucky, sorry. u_u

I have Kontakt's factory library (including the VSL strings, brass etc) and Session Strings. The VSL patches sound good in the lows but pretty damn fake in the highs. Session Strings is good for modern music and for wide, hard hitting sounds.
You can do this with Session Strings for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=oHo 3OBZwSUY#t=69s
This is NOT to advertise, purely to show Session Strings (which is why it's a timed link).

So it's a good library to have, indeed.

If you're considering EWQL Strings, be sure to get gold not platinum (even though they have that 50% off deal). Unless your computer is MAD BEAST it will not run EW Strings along with your other plugins well.

I would personally suggest Cinematic Strings 2. It is by and far the best sounding string library I own but this is a subjective thing as many others prefer LASS or EW Gold.
