I totally agree.

Thirded.

I think it's actually some good parenting, teaching a kid to be thankful, that's how it should be done. Kudos to the parents for the creative way of instilling that ideal.

I know as a kid, if I wasn't good with what I had, I'd lose it, I had to buy my gamecube twice. Now I take nothing for granted.

The only issue is that they should not post that online, THAT is pretty cruel.

It's the only way out!

I hope the parents just made the kid do that photo and once he apologised let him have his PS3 back. I wouldn't call it bad parenting but it definitely is not good parenting. Like someone said, we all have brattish moments but we learn from them, you don't take someone greater away from the child just because they didn't appreciate what they had been given that one time.

I can understand why they did what they did, but I just don't get the point of taking a picture and posting it on the internet.

No matter what the gift is, you should be happy you received it.

The fact that the parents would post this kind of stuff on the Internet is pretty shameful in itself. If you're going to teach a kid something, then do it in private, not in front of the world who will probably make fun of him for the rest of his life, and eventually pass the blame on the parents. I don't necessarily have a problem in the lesson itself, {unless this is a joke on their part} but the way they put it on the web is reprehensible.

That's as stupid as those parents who put placards on their kids for doing something wrong. Even kids need to be treated with some dignity, unless they want to cut off all contact with their parents in the future, it's no wonder why so many of them are screwed up when they are older.

Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.

What...this is more than bad...i mean why would they resell his Ps3 because he wasn't grateful for an action figure?
i just can't take that seriously, even if you are religious that's a bit...tragic...

If they can afford a PS3, why would they be getting free toys (the action figure) at the church?

..but the public humiliation is wrong.

I agree with taking away the PS3. If you're going to be ungrateful about a gift than you don't deserve a $300 one.

But posting it online is not okay. This is the kind of situation where it's clear that the parents likely don't have enough respect for their child. Just because someone does something minor wrong doesn't mean they need to be stripped of their dignity and publicly humiliated. Any parent who thinks otherwise isn't thinking of their child as a person, and that's the wrong way to parent. It sends the message to the kid that he (that is, the kid) has the right to strip the dignity from other people when he grows up. No form of parenting is good parenting if it imprints on the kid the idea that manipulation and humiliation is the right way to deal with conflict.

Also, lol 9gag

Depends. "I wasn't grateful" is a pretty broad term and I know nothing about the actual circumstances of what happened or his parents' general strictness. If he was throwing an outright tantrum because he only got an action figure, then yeah, that's pretty excellent parenting. Especially because they didn't just flatly punish him by taking the PS3 away, but instead took him to use the money from the PS3 to go shopping for gifts for other (I'm assuming underprivileged) kids. Hopefully that turned the whole thing into a positive experience that put things in perspective for him and taught him that the holidays are supposed to be about giving and all that jazz.

Making him take that picture and putting it on the Internet, however, is probably going too far. Involving millions of strangers in this punishment and humiliating the kid just doesn't sit right with me.

How embarrassing for the parents. I don't know this kid's situation. I don't know if he was really bratty about it or just unenthusiastic. I can hold no judgments about him. But if his parents insisted on broadcasting this like it's some kind of huge shame thing, then they have something wrong with them. I mean, what the fuck kind of punishment is that? Just the way the photo is taken instinctively makes me want to see the parents' expression while they're taking the photo, because I feel like I'm looking through a pointed fingertip rather than a camera lens.

Good parenting.

I was bitched out if I was ever ungrateful when people gave me free stuff, so I learned to appreciate it at a young age, and not to expect to be given things all the time.

the kid is wrong for being ungrateful, however the parents reaction beyond taking the console back to the store is disgraceful. shaming your kid on a place like the internet for no obvious reason other than shouting to the world about how much of an ass their over excited child was and how awesome they are for shitting on him in a completely superfluous manner is not good parenting.

i'm sure the self righteous teenagers on 9gag are all taking this as a grade A display of parenthood and making comments about how they're totally going to raise their children this way.
