Now I'm fully aware it's early in the morning for the states, however this is just depressing man.

What happened newgrounds?

Obligatory newgrounds was better back in the day thread. Also, I've been around since 04, don't let the account fool you.

Maybe I'm behind in the times, but isn't this like THE place to be for online flash games? I just don't get it. Not even that long ago we had atleast 3x the traffic we do now. There is literally no reason to use this forum, if I wanted to discuss something it would take like an hour to get a response, in that time I could have gone elsewhere.

Very frustrating.

It's the weekend, early morning, forums on any site have a drop in activity ... take your pick.

Indeed. Only old school users feel their opinion needs to be backed up by their sign-up date.

1. That answer your question my friend. The reality now is that nearly everyone who can afford an internet connection and a computer has a smartphone which is fully capable of playing these flash games 10 times better at a better convenience.

2. Flash artists that are popular took their weight to Youtube as the payout and reach is far greater.

I remember seeing kids playing flash games back down in the compute lab round here, now that place is either filled with senior student studying or just an occasional person checking his email.

I think my first account was 03, but I don't flaunt that fact due to the breaks that were sometimes years in between and how little I care to catch up on what happened during the forums between that time. A lot of forums I used to regularly visit are pretty dead now, but this one still gets a modest amount of traffic. However, I do faintly remember even back then in 03 people were always complaining about new sign-ups and how it was much better back in the day. Maybe it's just you outgrowing the website and your subconscious telling you to move on. *Shrug*

Yeah, that is depressing.
From Wikipedia:
In 1998, Tom Fulp of Newgrounds created a spoof of Teletubbies called Teletubby Fun Land which resulted in a law suit from the BBC. This resulted in a boost of notoriety and media exposure, and the video was renamed Telebubby Fun Land.

We need something more like that so that we can get a boost of notoriety.

And actually when it said that there were 15 users online that was just for the general forum and not on the rest of them. In the entire BBS there are 58 online right now so you are very inaccurate.

Early morning on a weekend, hmmm, I wonder why there is so little traffic....could it be everyone is asleep because they were up till 3am playing world of warcraft or out partying?

You're wrong my good sir. These forums used to be blown up by posts like no tomorrow. Back in 2006 to 2008 was crazy with posts everywhere, even at my favorite portion of the site, the Clubs and Crews. Now, it just seems like a wasteland. :( I still gonna enjoy this site for what it is though since it is a magnificent site. :)

There's definitely a big spike there (it's actually July 17, when I zoomed in).
Over 20,000 posts apparently...

It was definitely redesign.

I found the a range of thread IDs for that date (736000s)... and there were like 4-5 topics all on about the redesign.
Here's one that's pretty conclusive:

http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/736787/

I remember we allowed people to make whatever threads they wanted, because the staff wanted people to be excited. So the usual rule of "we already have that topic" was loosened (although there are a lot of deleted threads in that range :)).

I've been lurking the site since early '06. The Flash Portal has gotten loads slower. And do the Collections even get updated anymore? It actually looks like it has gotten smaller! What's up with that?

What we need is to force Newgrounds back into popularity. We should volunteer people to advertise Newgrounds everywhere. Maybe spawn some new memes. That should bring us back.

Memes... maybe.

See, Armour made some excellent points back on the first page. The wider spread of content over several online platforms means NG loses some of it notoriety for the *only* spot online to have what it has. Back in 2006, Facebook was barely a thing... Youtube was popular but nowhere near what it is now. If you wanted cool, original games, head to NG.

Even the type of kid who was the lifeblood of these forums (Male, aged 13-18) are in very different mindsets when it comes to the Internet. That's how fast things changed. Instead of loyally attaching themselves to the BBS, they have so much more choice... including Facebook, or Twitter, etc.

Simple advertising might bring more traffic to site, but it won't necessarily bolster our BBS community. It was stronger (if we count strength as number of posts/topics) back in the day because everyone felt more part of something unique. Flash itself is fighting a huge battle of relevancy.

So if we want this place to flourish again, it will take NG becoming more relevant to the digital world of today.

It isn't even just the forums that are being damaged. The rest of the site is suffering because of people that just want to vote five on everything for the sake of a shinier e-badge. This means that a bunch of shovelware and other stolen garbage gets through and clouds up the original, fun games made by interesting people.

You can also see the spike for the redesign this year (February) 8th) but it's comparatively minor. I wonder what happened in April 2005, the activity dropped and then picked up and maintained a much higher post rate (from ~8k per day before up to 11k per day after)

When I zoom in, it looks like it's closer to early May when that weird little surge happens. It is pretty dramatic actually.
The posts are in the 265000 area, for May 7th-ish, but I didn't see any theme jump out (I only looked at like, four though).
It could have been something like an ad buy that we don't know about... or a major meme maybe? Numa Numa? When was that crap?

Most of my thoughts were already mentioned but i also think forum use in general is an old method of communicating. Things like reddit, twitter, facebook notifications, etc are 'instant' and give you that boner of acknowledgement, much more so than a forum format does, where you make a reply and you wait and wait come back, oh nobody replied, wait wait. I guess thats not THAT much different than twitter or whatever, but i guess my point is that with the growth of the internet and having access to it from pretty much any device, people have become more accustomed to instant feedback and forums dont offer that and are more tedious.

I think things like that, are naturally progressions in the internet and we as newgrounds have to keep up with changing trends and adapt to them.

Either way, i like the ambiance still... if anything the retarded posters for the most part have spread themselves over the internet which is OK.

You could probably set your own up... not sure how the BBS is built but if something like http://feed43.com/ can convert a thread into an RSS, the rest wouldn't be too hard.
