The word "telephone" Dec. 10th, 2012 @ 08:31 PM Reply

When was the last time you heard someone say the word "telephone" as opposed to just "phone"? The last time I can recall hearing the full word was when it was sung in some songs from the 1960s-80s.

To be honest... just last week. I heard someone say the word. I do, after all, live in an out dated town.

I said that word "telephone" this year I think. Someone didn't understand me when I said phone so I said "telephone" to clarify.

When it makes sense to use it I hear it. Most people don't use them anymore.

Rarely do I hear 'phone' used. Telephone is the accurate term.

Phone means the exact same thing as telephone, so how can telephone be more accurate than phone?

Tele-far. Phone - voice. A telephone 'farthers' your voice. What a 'phone' does? Nothing.

The last time I heard the word 'telephone' was when I was describing religious history as a game of telephone.

Phone has many meanings besides the shortening of 'telephone'. As you said, there's voice or if you want to be more specific, sound. Things can be phonal (adjective), you can phone someone (verb), you can even play the saxophone (it doesn't just mean voice in this case).

Language is fluid and ever changing due to people using it as a tool, so technically there's shit-tons of words people use incorrectly, but so long as the communication is understandable it's correct.

I think the word telephone is especially used about those old phones. Unlike mobile phones which are phones you can carry around in your pocket or conveniently shove them up your ass. If you do a Google image search for "telephone", then just "phone", "mobilephone" and "mobile" you will see what I mean.

Also, the song "Lady Gaga - Telephone ft. Beyoncé".

Next, let's make a thread about the word "locomotive" :D

The precise word "telephone" I usually never hear because I do live in Sweden after all. But the exact translation do hear all the time, since we Sweds don't have an equivalent of just saying "phone".

Same here in Norway. The exact translation to telephone would be "telefon", but "fon" is not a word alone here. Instead we may say "mobil" which is shorter than "telefon". Or an even longer word, "mobiltelefon". But nobody ever says the whole word, it's either telephone or mobile.

The Greek word that English ripped off of means "sound". When you call it a "phone", you're referring to it as a "sound". Not very logical. That's why punctuation was invented.

Why does AT&T (Atlantic Telephone & Telegraph) still have the "&T" in their logo? Do they still do telegraph services?

Shouldn't they just change their name to "Atlantic Telecom" or something?
