Well, in my personal opinion. I do occasionally wear a tail but not because I want to flaunt I'm a furry or shove the fact that I'm a furry down anyone's throat, I just like to wear it. Like any other piece of clothing, I just want to wear it. I only tend to act like my fursona if I'm roleplaying with another furry friend of mine. If someone asks if I'm a furry, I just reply I am and continue on. If they say something like "freak! creep! oh you fuck animals! fucking wierdo!" or some judgemental thing due to what the publicity on the internet has driven the view on furries to be, I will tell them what a furry really is. I'll say that a furry is not someone who fucks animals, or faps to cartoon animals, or does necessarily any of the perverted and messed up things people say we do. We simply enjoy looking at artwork of anthromorphic animals, reading stories of anthromorphic animals, and just enjoying a fandom same as any other member of a fandom would do. Though, like every fandom, there are those who take it to darker or more serious roles. And there are those who will try to shove it down others throats but that doesn't mean everyone in the fandom is like that. There are those, like me, who just enjoy the fandom and want to wear certain apparrel that corresponds with said fandom. i.e. The brony clothing some will wear. Or shirts corressponding with a particular anime someone likes. And there are some who even wear tails but aren't furries. A couple of my friends do. Its a fashion accessory that doesn't necessarily coincide with the furry fandom, but it can. If someone chooses to wear specific clothing to either express the fandom they are apart of, or just because they find the the clothing fashionable, its their choice and isn't affecting anyone else in any way. I can understand where people get their views on fandoms due to the more widely known, darker sides of said fandoms, but not every person in said fandom is like the internet says they are.

No, that's a common misconception. I think this emo Canadian guy describes it best, in this video from the show's early days. He's done a couple more since then, and in one of them he said something along the lines of:

"Every fandom has a dark side. For example, the Star Wars fans who refuse to accept the three prequel movies as canon, simply because they don't like them.
