I've always preferred original work over fan art simply because it is original but fan art can have it's charms. Original is just a better way to show how creative you can be, in my opinion.

Original hands down. 100% of the time original is better.
Even bad original art i put above fanart or parodies.

Fanart and parodies are just things you do to take a break from creating original work, in my opinion.

I'm also of the opinion that the genre, be it anime or western or otherwise, has nothing to do with it.

Original work, hands down. Though fan art tends to get searched more, if you have the right networks, your original work can become popular really quickly...

The best is what's funnest to you personally, and the one that feels less like just tedious work in my opinion.

In my DeviantART page, I've noticed that my parody works get viewed much more than my original work. One of my most popular comics has over 9000 views (Pardon the meme XD) whereas one of my original colourings only has 150 after three years.

So here's the billion dollar question: How do you get contacts and connections WITHOUT doing fanart and parodies?

Deviantart is a bad website if you want to get serious contacts and actually want to do business.

Well I would understand that in YOUR case fanart will be viewed more, since those are probably tagged with words people look for. but if you draw good enough then those original pics will also be viewed a lot. No offense but your drawings are just not really good and so youre relying on TVshows to get views, but that wont help you getting a contract. I think that, if its a career you want, people are way more interested in original stuff then in fanart. "So you can draw something that already exists, no need for that."
