This thread is dedicated to discussing the Winter Write-Off.

I'll be updating this thread with some points, tips, and advice, as well as prompts and idea seeds to get gears rolling. Remember that this competition is about potential and workmanship. Formats and outlines will become available as we move along. For now, just focus on forming the idea and giving it a treatment. You'll be ready to work on the script or design doc soon enough, but with 3 months to do this, there's plenty of time. So take it slowly.

I'll be linking to the official thread shortly.

This looks like it's gonna be tough. I've never tried something like this. But I'm always eager to try new things!

As promised, and promptly forgotten, here's a link to the submission thread: http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1325712

It's different. It takes a different set of skills but borrows a lot on the creative writing process. Good luck!

So, we give ideas to the Animators and Game Designers? Oh god, brainstorming...

Let's say I wrote the script of the winning movie/game. Do I win a prize?

Yeah this is where I'm confused ^

Is the reason that it's 3 months is because you're going to be encouraging animators and game developers to use these ideas as the contest goes on? Or is this purely a script-design doc making contest? And would games/movies made from submissions here have any affiliation with the contest?

I was imagining it could be like, if everyone submits their scripts in a month, then they could all be posted, and the winners announced, and developers/animators get to look at the submissions and use any of they like them. But I'm not sure what you have in mind.

Sorry. To clarify, the people submitting, such as yourself, will only be submitting a script or game design doc. There won't be any attempt to create a finished product unless you pursue it after the project.

The duration was supposed to be 2 1/2 months but I forgot to adjust the deadline date. But this first one will have a bit more time to work out the kinks so that future ones are more streamlined. I want to give enough time so that people can ask questions and learn, and optimize their chances. Monthly contests tend to encourage quick and sloppy submissions and I want to avoid that.

I was imagining it could be like, if everyone submits their scripts in a month, then they could all be posted, and the winners announced, and developers/animators get to look at the submissions and use any of they like them. But I'm not sure what you have in mind.

The purpose of this contest is to help those submitting, and anyone following along, understand the purpose of a writer/creative designer. In the end, as I understand it, that's what I think Tom wanted with this place. As everyone knows, Audio, Art/Animation, and Programmer are the established trinity. There needs to be a fourth: creative director. That fourth person must be able to take the ideas of the other three and maximize its effectiveness. So, I imagine this contest being a sort of proving ground. If a person can do it alone, they should be able to do it well with others. At the very least it encourages the initially vision of this forum.

Thanks for the answers and stuff.

Not to sound conceded or anything, but does the winning script writer win a prize as well? You didn't answer that :P
