It's not exactly the durability of the glass. It's more the fact that there are stress concentrations around the windows and when a (fatigue) crack initiates at one of the edges the size of the window will also contribute to the so-called effective crack length. So basically the bigger the windows, the lower the time (or amount of flights) until a critical fracture at the edge of the window. Ideally you don't want windows at all, but then passengers start whining that they can't look outside...
