Capitalism in it's modern form we associate it with has been implemented since the 16th century, with the advent of Mercantlism, but most economists agree that it's existed in some form or other since the demise of feudalism in Western countries.
It's a system that refers to the private ownership of means of production, used to create consumer goods (balloons, fleshlights, food, what have you) and capitol goods. Means of productions requires the three following aspects:
1. Labor (need someone to produce, also refers to Human Capitol)
2. Land (need somewhere to produce)
3. Capitol Goods (think machinery/equipment/buildings)
Capitalism entails private ownership of the latter two.
There's a shitload of criticism around Capitalism, and to be frank all of its pretty valid. Just calling it a "scam", though, is really fucking stupid.
