Go for it. If this is your first full animation, I suggest making it short as people to get unmotivated in long projects. Its a good idea to post WIP as it can gather some watchers and its nice to have some feedback so you can go back and fix it. agreed on above comment. If you get burnt out on your creation, chances are that it will show in the final product.
Try to stick with subjects that interest you deeply when starting out, and keep it short. Only worry about animation/visual elements... things like being able to piece a story together and guide the viewer's eyes throughout the feature can come after you have a decent grasp on the concepts of motion.
