I'm not getting impatient or anything, but the animation demo is taking too long and I wanted to start my projects ASAP. It may sound like i'm getting ahead of myself but I was wondering: Would it be a good idea to start with the project and post WIP as I go?

Go for it. If this is your first full animation, I suggest making it short as people to get unmotivated in long projects. Its a good idea to post WIP as it can gather some watchers and its nice to have some feedback so you can go back and fix it. I am currently doing a project and posting my WIP here http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1307864.

agreed on above comment. If you get burnt out on your creation, chances are that it will show in the final product.

Try to stick with subjects that interest you deeply when starting out, and keep it short. Only worry about animation/visual elements... things like being able to piece a story together and guide the viewer's eyes throughout the feature can come after you have a decent grasp on the concepts of motion.
