They haven't "run out of ideas". Any creative professional will tell you that ideas are as fucking cheap as chips. Most artists will tell you that they've got more fucking ideas then they know what to do with.
The problem is that they're a company, and most companies are under the impression that a single misstep will lead to ruin. They're not there to bring you fantastic new works, they're there to make money, and that's exactly what they intend to do, with the safest path available.
Really, we've only got ourselves (as a collective) to blame. We proved that they didn't need to take risks to make money, and as Frank Herbert put it, the safe path only ever leads to stagnation.
