Hey folks!
So, I watched Gundam (or what I believe was Gundam) when I was a small lad, and the only thing I remember about this anime is that there was like a scally-metallic virus type thing, and a guy with a metal half mask that is suppose to be a 'good guy' until the end of the series, where he is revealed to be an antagonist.
Please for give my ignorance!

Okay, well, the metal mask is a trend of the series started by Char Aznable, who waaay later in the continuity kinda went undercover as some asshole in sunglasses, but he wasn't wearing a metal mask. Eventually, in Gundam Unicorn there's this guy that (claims) to be Char, and he has a metal half mask once again in tribute to the Red Comet's signature.
There was an alternate dimension bullshit which many of you would know as Gundam Wing which had nothing to do with the original Gundam storyline, but the uncreative fucks that wrote that show thought that their villain, Zechs Marquise, had to have a metal mask kinda like Char.
If you could give more information about the show that would be great. Visual references, preferably...the "scaly virus" shit threw me off, sorry.

One Gundam series that I'm very unfamiliar with is a seperate reality spinoff series called "Turn A" Gundam. See if that jogs your memory.

I'm also not familiar with Gundam Seed's continuity or Gundam 00's continuity. I mostly paid attention to the Universal Century timeline.

I gotcha, well it's not Char. I've looked into him, and he doesn't appear to be him.
It's not so much a mask, but like a metal plate above one of his eyes.

Is this the guy? If it is, he's from Gundam 00.

Unfortunately no :P
He had this small metal plate above his (left?) eye that covered this metallic virus.

maybe you should try to IMDB for what year you might be close... or possibly do an image search on google until you see something you recognize, then find out from what series it's from, and there you go.

In a private conversation with OP, we've concluded that this show was not Gundam related if that narrows it down.

Thanks all!
G Gundam is the most fun I have from watching the series, sometimes I wonder if Tengen Toppa Gurran Lagann drew some inspiration from the series.
Just went back watching the original series, hard to believe they were going to kill Amuro midway through the series before Tomino and the writing staff changed their minds.

Too bad Bright Noa wasn't a character in EVA, Shinji could really use a Bright slap. With that, maybe the series wouldn't have gotten into he mode of WTF in the end.
Then again it didn't stop "Char's Counterattack" from being ambiguous in the end (though it's clear that Amuro and Char are dead).

Mobile Fighter G Gundam is far and away my favorite Gundam show, partly due to the fact that they it's about as politically incorrect as you can get with a series, {Japanese version at least.} and it breaks the premise of other Gundam series where it usually boils down to "Star Wars with mechs", not that it's a bad thing, of course, but still.
MFGG is also one of, if not the most influential out of all of the franchise, as it was the inspiration to some degree with TTGL, as Idiot-Finder mentioned, as well as Code Geass, specifically with Kallen. Once you think about it, Kallen is an expy of Domon Kasshu, from their aggressive attitude and hairstyle, to their signature finishing move in their respective mechs. Never mind that the same Japanese VA that voices Rain Mikamura also voices Kallen's mom in their respective series.
Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.

"Freaks" is definitely appropriate in this case.

I know, that's the funny thing although her role I recognized the most was Keiko from Yu Yu Hakusho. I saw the Jap episode of G Gundam and realized that Domon was much more psychotic. In the English version, he was simply yelling but in the Jap version, he was freaking screaming like a psychopath.
Hear that alone you'd think he's a villain.
It's funny how they got his VA to parody is most famous role in Lucky Star.
