Thank you.

Forrest Gump and The Untouchables receive too much empty credit as well.

Yet to see Forrest Gump, I've heard it's pretty great.

I don't really think any of Stanley Kubrick where that great. I mean they're good, but they're not amazing as everyone thinks they are.

A Clockwork Orange and A Space Odyssey are incredible and deserve all the credit they got. I'm about to see Dr. Strangelove though.

The Hangover runs the usual comedic formula. Plenty of laughs to be had in the absurdity, but it remains understandably overrated in a market saturated by the aforementioned paperweight comedies.

Pulp Fiction and Winter's Bone also both suffer from being great films that received altogether too much laud for what they did. Were Roger Ebert to draw a the usual comparative study between these two and their respective stylistic genres, they would ring much lower than on the tier of greatness than as independent movies. On it's own, Pulp Fiction is a genre-bending affectionate parody and romp in film-making techniques, whereas Winter's Bone plays the grey shooter card to the millionth degree and crosses it with the vibe of a hillbilly's Great Depression. Cool ideas, but also slightly pretentious and by no means as innovative as they could have been.

Almost every serious drama here in Sweden gets praised, even if they're wroth it or not. Though some might be bad and even sometimes good I sick seeing the same damn drama over again while other claims it to be new and inspiring.

Their films sometimes attract large audiences, but that doesn't mean they are highly rated. As far as I know most of their films get poor reviews by critics, score around and below a 5.0 on IMDB and are generally hated by many. So I reckon they're rated just fine.

Anyway, some popular films I didn't like are Full Metal Jacket, Children of Men and Fight Club. I wouldn't say they're overrated though, just my opinion.

Dr Strangelove is brilliant. I loved A Clockwork Orange too but for the rest Kubrick has been hit and miss with me.

Calling critically acclaimed and commercially successful films "overrated" is something of a pet peeve for me. I say that once a film has achieved both factors it deserves all the praise it can bloody well get - Fight Club, Inception, Evil Dead, whatever, fact is that while they may not be completely mind blowing pieces of film in retrospect (no video ever is) they took the fucking plunge in a sea of remakes and sequels (Hollywood has always been risk-aversive) and to encourage that sort of behaviour let's make them lap up the praise all the time forever.

Underrated films and films everyone seems to like for no good reason are another story. For the latter I'd say Tim Burton films; no-one I know can articulate a single piece of praise for them outside of Tim Burton's distinctive art style. I liked Big Fish, but I tend to view anything with Johnny Depp is an assload of white makeup with a negative disposition.

I also loved the Shining, the whole movie was really well made, plus the incredible performance by Jack Nicholson.

The Shawshank Redemption.

I read a post in a comment thread on the AV Club a little while ago that called it "the most good movie ever made," which is the perfect way to describe it. Shawshank is a well-shot, well-acted, well-written movie that does nearly everything exactly right, and it bores the shit out of me. Middlebrow Oscar-bait is just the worst.

Dr Strangelove is definitely worth the watch. And Clockwork Orange was an amazing film but not one I would really want to watch again despite it being good. I liked 2001 but again I wouldn't rewatch it really. Such things work better as memories imo.

I also agree with others saying Forest Gump is overrated, I watched it once and have to say I didn't enjoy it. The film is very dull and uninteresting.

As for films I think are overrated, basically anything that massive amounts of teenagers mostly American bang on about. American Pie as an example, how anyone can sit through even one of those shitfests is beyond me. Also any of the far to overdone shit parody films made with the same type of humour, like that Scream or whatever it was called and the "A ___ movie" like the superhero movie etc. all completely shit, bland humour, crap ideas and incredibly poorly made parodies. I do love a good parody film, however they are NOT good parody films.

Titanic, it feels too forced to have a romance with a Sinking Ship.
Most Modern Horrors are overrated too, with their "screen audiences." It doesn't matter if the audience is scared if the movie is so shitty.

Inception.
Great shots, acting, plot, premise etc but here's what I hate. When I hear a conversation about inception people are always like "ermagerhd did u get it?" get what? there was no puzzle to be solved, it isn't some mind bending masterpiece, he walks away from the fucking beyblade or whatever because he doesn't care, reality is relative. Do you need someone to literally come on after the credits and say "And the moral of the story is..."? There's nothing complex about it but for some reason people keep perpetuating the idea that it is so other go and see it with that idea planted in their minds and come out saying the same stupid bullshit.

Scarface.
The dumbest fucking movie ever, yeah yeah yeah, coke and guns, who cares?

Stanley Kubricks films: lol no don't be ridiculous, if I had to pick the films of only one director to survive the apocalypse it would be his. 2001 is absurdly good, I don't think any other movie could keep me captivated for so long with such little dialog or explanations.

Really? Which ones are a miss?

Full Metal Jacket especially. If I remember correctly it was because the point of the first hour was already clear after 10 minutes and the second half of the film was just unimpressive to me. Also, I've never seen an army unit in a film act so stupid as in the last scenes of this film.

Also, I'm not sure what to think of 2001: A Space Odyssey. On one end it's an epic piece of cinema and I really liked HAL, but on the other hand I feel that the film is incredibly slow and quite boring in many parts. It's not something I would gladly re-watch.

The Shining was pretty good in my opinion.

I'll get to see that one after Dr. Strangelove then.

It is a hard movie, no doubt about it. But everything about it is incredible. The special effects, the scenery, the ambient, the choice of images instead of words, which are as you said barely there, HAL, that match-cut, the hidden messages and interpretations...
It's outstanding, but pretty hard to get and to watch in one setting, especially more than once.

Admittedly, this is true, but I still love it.

I'd say movies like Evil Dead, that were made with a really small budget, and because of that are apparently genius. They're not bad movies, but people never shut the fuck up about how great they are.

Also Pursuit of Happiness. God, did people love to talk about this movie. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but people just don't stop praising it.
