Here's an interesting bit of trivia. The person considered to be the main pioneer for anime, Osamu Tenzu (okay, I don't know how to spell his name or even pronounce it) said that he was inspired by Donald Duck comics with the big eyes on the duck characters. Cracked.com said that was the #1 thing that Donald Duck invented: anime!

I was watching this interesting video that talked about why big eyes and big heads are cute. It's because babies look that way, and probably because of evolution, we have learned to take care of babies, so their appearances are the things we regard as the most precious, because they are the most precious to us. The same goes for smaller animals and anime characters or any other characters.
