3.97 / 5.00 20,734 ViewsThere's been an exciting new development on NG this past week - HTML5 game support!
The system is invite-only at the moment but allows developers to upload a ZIP.
The first HTML5 game that arrived through the new system was Dual Custody:
Carry a baby through a trap filled maze!
Unfortunately it didn't work in Firefox and IE during its first weekend of release and got downvoted a bunch. It turned out our servers needed a proper MIME-Type response for .ogg and .m4a files, otherwise Firefox and IE blocked it. That's been fixed now so PLAY!
Other HTML5 games include:
A hardcore gravity-shifting action platformer!
Reach the highest point of the tower, ninja style !
Help Froghead save the world in this epic and challenging platformer.
The above games were made with Construct 2, a visual HTML5 game development tool. We've set up a Construct 2 collection in our Game Dev Platforms section so you can weigh your development options!
And say what you will about the Arrow promotional game, but it has the unique honor of being the ONLY game on NG that you can play on an iPhone. The other HTML5 games require a keyboard.
If you're an HTML5 game developer and want to take NG for a spin, PM me!
In other news...
We'll be having our annual Pumpkin Carving contest soon! Get that pumpkin carved with an NG theme, take a picture and have it ready for the contest thread. Need suggestions? Here's 75 of them:
How well do you know the characters of 2012 on NG?
If you prefer digital carving, we'll have some prizes for the best Carve 'n Share of the season:
Carve your nightmarish vision of halloween on your pumkpin and share it with Newgrounds!
Evil-Dog made Carve 'n Share in 2010 and now has to update it every year to add seasonal sorting.
Speaking of Evil-Dog, to celebrate the upcoming Road of the Dead follow-up we have a new item in the store! Check out this Saga of the Dead Poster, while supplies last! It's based on this art by SickDeathFiend:
A poster for me and Evil-Dog's zombie series. includes characters from Road of the dead, Lab of the dead, Range of the Dead, ...
Also don't forget the ongoing Halloween Spooktacular, with prizes for movies, games, music and art!
Does that mean I can play Newgrounds game on my iPod now?

If you can't find anyone, you can just give it to me and call it a day. That would make it easier.
The Review Request club, the Blammers List (update every 15th), and the Protectors List (Update every 1st). My sig has it all.

Oh Goody! I've never actually joined the pumpkin carving contest before, but I've already got an excellent idea! Let's get it on dudes!!!
A journey of a thousand miles begins with complaining
I've already carved one Larry.
finished it last week
And a rainbow dash
A friend asked me to do a presentation sort of thing at her DAR thing today. So I present My Dash-o-Lantern
and I still have one more local carving contest before the month is done.
So Hopefully I'm still in this.
I've already got my pumpkin carving concept ready, I'm just waiting for a closer date so that I don't carve it too early and it goes messy by Halloween.
I'm not gonna tell you what it is, but lets just say it's something very classic with regards to NG/

sweet, I'm getting tired of the Flash platform. also Firefox uses ogg, and not mp3, mp3 is a patent riddled format while ogg was designed to be patent free, same thing with mp4 and H.264 and H.263+, plus Vorbis is superior to MPEG-2 Audio Layer III in terms of compression, and performance, and Theora is a lot less cpu intensive than both H.264 and H.263+, so much so that hardware acceleration might not be necessary, also, I'm well aware of the MIME-Type response problem, when I made an HTML5 based ogg player so I could finally ditch flash on my site, fortunately Firefox 16 now supports the application/x-ogg MIME-Type as well as the audio/ogg, also Firefox tends to follow standards more closely than other browsers and the HTML5 standard says the server response overrides the 'type' attribute in the audio and video tags, not the other way around, so fixing the server response is not optional, the 'type' attribute is just fallback, the reason the HTML5 standard has it like this is to prevent security issues from outside HTML code, there is an addon for Firefox to force the MIME-Type for the client side, it was created because some servers return the wrong MIME-Type.

I'll make a small HTML5 game. I'll PM you if/when it's done.

I look forward to that! It ought to be awesome!

Hmm, not too sure about the direction HTML5 is taking, to be brutally honest. I've heard a lot of doom and gloom for Flash, so hopefully the two can coexist. That's just my own rambling, though.

It means in time you will have more and more games available on your iPod, yes. As we get more content ready for mobile we'll offer better browsing options as well.

I actually announced the winner here, I guess it's kinda hidden:
So, we carve our pumpkin and take a picture of it. Do we make it a regular art submission or something? How do we upload it and tag it?

Woot! Finally, I might be able to upload a couple of my modest HTML5 doodles.

I'm gonna post a contest thread where you can upload a photo OR link your Art Portal entry, if you want to submit it there. If you submit it to the Art Portal, tag is "pumpkin2012"... I'll have to make a note of that in the contest thread. :)
Man, I'm having some serious issues with my toes.
They're like clubbed :<
Think Megan Fox's thumb times ten.
I'm a hideous creature, I might draw myself for some Halloween based project. Maybe carve my toes into a pumpkin or something.
Looking forward to seeing the Carve 'n' Share submissions this year.

Aww, that isn't a nice thing to say about yourself.

Think of it as a challenge for all the people who have said HTML5 will be the death of Flash - now they can go head to head!

"the death of flash" - we will see.

still cool what you can do with HTML5, though ^.^

Still plan to tidy it up, trying to wrap up an unfinished project before the year ends.
Does that mean I can submit real time demo on NG? :O
