Regardless of the usual parameters, half life 1 can be played endlessly. I choose 1.

To me, Half Life 1 started one of my favorite franchises in my life.

But, Half Life 2 is a masterpiece. I love the story, the gameplay, but most of all the atmosphere.

Many people would say Half Life 2 is overrated, and I can see why they think that way, but personally I think it's amazing.

Half life 1 was, and still is, amazing but I'd have to give this one to Half life 2 which was a masterpiece in every sense of the word.

HL1 is easy to get into and can be enjoyed multiple times.

HL2 is epic, but it only feels right to play it (and its sequel episodes) once and wait for the next HL.

I find HL1 easier to replay and its still fun to play today (I play it once or twice a year) but HL2 is very good the first time around because of the story and its variety/surprises

too hard to say what is the best I feel more nostalgia for HL1 though since it was one of the earlier games I ever played, HL2 I only played for the first time in 2007

I still haven't been able to play the first one because my PS2 won't play CD-ROM format games.

I have yet to finish the first game (Steam copy, not Black Mesa), but I don't expect it to overtake HL2.

I thought Half-Life 2 had a much more engaging plot for some reason, it's also so well designed.

I'm going with HL1 for this as well. It had a more memorable impact on me when I first played it. More so than HL2, which is just as amazing too.

What part?

No offense, guys who like HL2, but I played both recently. (HL2 before HL1) and I find HL1 to be a much better game mainly because it's more challenging, even without the physics that HL2 had the puzzles were designed better, and overall, I think it had better pacing. 9I'm at interloper), the only bad thing is I have screen tearing on the game.

Yeah I would of said HL1 is about the same but in a different way, but Xen just sucked ass to be honest.

Also doesnt hl1 have vsync for screen tearing?

Half-Life 1 for nostalgic reasons, although i favor 2. I play through Hl2-Epi2 at least twice a year, Hl1 like once every two years. HL is probably my favorite series ever. I've been playing it since i was 4, and as soon as i was old enough to understand the mechanics and story, Valve won a lifetime customer (unless they ruin the series somehow).

Since I haven't played the first Half-life game, I would go with HL2. Neither game is really that spectacular, so I wouldn't be missing anything if I did play the first game, and yes I really do mean that.

...How the fuck can you say HL1 isn't really that spectacular if you've never even played it? That's like saying you hate oranges even though you've never tasted one before.

I don't think that the Half-Life series as a whole is that spectacular, and I simply wouldn't be missing much by playing the first game. Someday I might get around to it, but I'm not going to stop what I'm playing now to get this game.

Well I don't know yet, I played and finished Half Life 2, along with Episodes 1 and 2 a few months ago when I got The Orange Box for Xbox. Now just the other day I got a new laptop which is much better than my old shit computer which couldn't even run Minecraft properly.

Now I have Black Mesa, so once I've finished that I will let you know. So far however I prefer Half Life 2.

However I don't know how much of the game is actually different to the original Half Life, there are some enemies in the game that I've never seen before, and I would have expected them to also had been in Half Life 2, unless each game has unique enemies?

Just wondering if those things that look like over-sized headcrabs that scream or shoot sound waves at you are in the original Half Life.

main differences between black mesa and half life is

- graphics, obviously

- black mesa AI isn't as good (I think)

- no xen

you should try out the original game or at least source, if you want to see it, you can't judge from some community mod that probably has several changes to it.

I wish that place was included in the HL2 series.

Well, I used to wish Black Mesa was included in HL2 also - Kind of impossible considering the entire facility was (SPOILER).

Well I knew about the improved graphics, but I'm only taking into consideration things like gameplay, story etc. It was so weird seeing Alyx's Dad with both his legs. The AI doesn't seem that much different than HL2, people who follow me are pretty helpful for the most part. And I have no idea what Xen is, and what about those enemies that scream at you?

I'm playing through both HL and HL2 at the moment as I recently bought a new PC. I completed HL and all of the add ons when it was first released, yet it is one of those that games that stays with you.

Having just done the Blast Pit level I can honestly say that is one of the best level designs in any game ever. It creates real tension and takes a bit of thought to get past. So many parts of Half Life can be played and replayed over and over- there are so few FPS games that this is true of.

Half Life 2 has been great so far as well, but it doesn't remain in my mind in the same way or keep dragging me back to play more. I think the story is better, but the gameplay lacks the same ingenious level design and replayability.

Both great, but the original Half Life will forever be one of my favourite games.
