I think emotion is very important. I prefer songs with strong emotions like anger or sadness. Other motions can be strong but they're usually not as... passionate? I guess that applies to music in general.

i guess i'll just roll with it for now considering there isn't a forum mod currently online

to expand on my previous incompleted point, you share a similar taste with I. I prefer the much more creative lyrical flow of old-school rap, and while a good amount of rap is written from the perspective of the rapper, i much rather enjoy a more creative lyrical style that sort of tells a story or even just random thoughts strung together with smooth flow, much like the style of MF Doom, who produces relatively new songs today but his origins as a rapper go much further back.

I can't say that I am a rap expert either, and anyone who mindlessly bleets Tupac or Biggie can't call themselves one either. Sure they're good but fuck they've been overplayed to death. i certainly prefer other genres over rap

I would honestly think that's how most good rappers start, it gives them a good reason to start a career in rap and also gives them something interesting to rap about. these people have been exploited for years and rap was only a poetic expression of the oppresion these people had experienced.

sorry I don't mean to sound like such a white knight for the blacks

Lost of punch lines and metaphors and overall lyrics that make you THINK is the formula to really good Rap; then there's just shit that rhymes with no substance but is entertaining to hear. Ear candy

Was Bob Marley singing about Tecs when he sung I'm jammin' ?

also a good point, it's all about the production value of a song, anyone can really sing about fucking bitches and getting drunk and having nice things

it takes a lot of effort to make something meaningful, generally more care and attention will be received to a song with a certain level of dedication and true effort

I'll listen to a rapper who is proficient in any area that I find pleasing. I don't look for a standard in x y z. I'll listen to an artist who has a typical flow but awesome rhyme schemes, and I'll listen to an artist with simple rhymes but an engaging delivery.

what kind of criticism(?) is that? much of the most difficult music is in 4/4.

Its all important to me. The lyrics, the flow, the music. I dont settle. I dislike music that lacks quality and style. If it sounds too soulless/electronic/monotonous too like pots and pans being banged together I turn it off. I listen more to the old school as I listen to mostly old music because its easier to find things I like.

What makes good rap: Decent meaningful lyrics - eminem/dre/tupac
What makes shit rap: Lyrics about: bling/ cars/ sluts

It's fine have some silly songs but most rappers now are just fucking atrocious.

I don't know, I don't really "listen" to music so much as I use it for white noise while I'm doing other stuff. So despite all the hours a day I have music on (including quite a bit of rap) I still have about as much taste as themepark food.

Good lyrics, good flow, and especially a good beat. If the beat is shit/doesn't fit the tune, I tend to lose interest quickly.

And by ''tune'' I mean vocals. Don't know why I wrote that, oh well.

capitalistic + violent + misogynistic + unapologetic

white people have no business listening to rap either
