Hey,
Any of you newgrounders in graduate school?

If so, what do you think is important in selecting a graduate professor?

I keep hearing their fame is your fame. What do you think?

I'm a scientist studying prenatal ultrasound. You should read www.fetalsonosafety.com before letting a doctor US your baby.

Yep.

You mean the professor that oversees your thesis work?

I keep hearing their fame is your fame. What do you think?

I've just started with my Master's so I haven't given it much thought yet, but personally I wouldn't choose based on that. I think it's much more important to look at what field of expertise you want to graduate in and from there you'll probably be bounded to a professor already anyway. Also, if he's an arrogant asshole I wouldn't want to work with him either, regardless of how famous he is.

Would you choose between a well known graduate professor in a slightly off-topic-your research interests field, or a less known graduate professor in a close match?

Here's a tip: don't get future career advice from the people on this site, they have the collective intelligence of a turnip.

not a lot of people here have made it that far in life. i'm a "senior" in college (if that's the proper term) but that's still not graduate level yet

you should be able to get along with your advisor well. also, look at the professor's research interest first and make sure it matches with yours. otherwise, you are going to waste four or five years of your life doing things that you don't enjoy.

you will become your advisor's (teaching and research) slave once he have decided to do a MPhil/PhD. you will be doing the research for him instead of for yourself. so don't complain.

No, fuck, stop it. I come here to get away from talking/thinking about what the fuck I'm going to do after I graduate.
