I realize asking for cheap music isn't something composers might appreciate, but this being my first flash game, I can't really invest in custom music.
I am working on a zombie defense game. The game itself is about surviving from zombies by shooting them before they destroy the barricade. The art is done in a comical way.
I tried using two types of music in the game - fast, action music and also a lively, comical music. And I have gotten feedback about both types not going too well with the game. Not having any musical background I can't get my head around what music would go well and fit the game.
You can try the game here if you create a FGL account
I would really love if someone could maybe take a look and see what you can come up with. And since the game is projected to release end of the month, your efforts won't be wasted.
Let me know & thanks again!
Hey there. :) I had a play, it's a cool game, congrats!
Personally I feel some rock music would fit well, as for the "feel" of the music, well here are a selection of tracks you may be interested in. :)
(This first one really fits the theme of a zombie apocalypse too)

I just released a heavy metal album! The Instrumental version is available too.
The issue i'm seeing with your game is your visuals and your audio is telling VERY different stories. The story being told by the soldier is dark, somber, and tries to set a serious mood. Then you've got this light jazzy and pretty song following right after. On top of that you are telling the player the setting is moody and dark with a fog but wrongfully enforcing that setting with bright cheery colors.
You need to pick an angle and stick to it. Is it going to be a serious game? A light hearted game (plants vs zombies esque)? Right now, no music will really work because visually you are not united.
If it's a serious epic tone you're going for. I recommend the following.
- Track 1
- Track 1's respective menu track
Here's a pack of ours filled with just really evil, dark stuff.
Horror Pack
And if you need happier stuff, well you've already found loads of happier sounding songs :D. Just be clear with what tone you're setting, right now it's all over the place.
Perhaps consider a calm dark piece instead of dark battle music, sometimes that can set a better atmosphere-
Dark and mysterious orchestral piece.
on the other hand, you can try some more battle-like stuff with an emphasis on chaos-
A dark and warlike loop with warlike intent.
Nice dark battle theme for a game.
Thank you guys for your suggestions, but this confuses me even more since you all posted such varying genres :(
Maybe like MaestroRage suggested, my game might be sending out mixed signals. The thing is, I had started this game out as a dark survival game, but with enough feedback realized those don't really work well as a flash game. Players like comical, light hearted stuff done with flashy art and popping sounds. Thus the redoing of all the art and sounds.
Here is how I envision the game:
All the art is going to be completed using the comical style you have seen in most of the game. There shall be no gritty, dark pieces. Things like the fog, I can very easily switch that off or even replace it with some comical effect. The story, I agree is a bit serious for the art, so thanks for the suggestion. I shall work on making it a bit lighter.
So considering all this now, what do you think the sounds and music should be like?
Well if you beef up the sound effects a bit you can have this kind of music:

It's more "cool" than dark. :)
Otherwise there's this: http://soundcloud.com/metalrenard/axe-to-the-face
I see what you mean about the art style, the thing is... Zombies. Haha
Don't know if comedy and zombies mix well unless you really take it to the extreme so it becomes a work of parody.
If that's the case then this might fit (not metal):

Imagine blasting cartoon zombies to that... Epic!

I tried a few of my tracks while playing the game, and here are the ones I thought worked well. Let me know if any of them interest you.
For an intense sound, I'd say use this one, starting at around 1:50, unless you want the buildup in.
Day 4 of uploading something new every day.
For more of a creepy, ambient sound, you could use this.
A simple, chill track
I'm not sure how I'd describe the feel of this one, but I thought it fit.
Just a quick demo I made so I could try out the loop setting.
These are all my original tracks, so as long as you credit me, there's no problem with you using them.
Uploaded a new build - https://www.fgl.com/view_game.php?from=dev&game_id=23210. Could you choose your top 3 music from the first 8 levels of the game?
Heres a lil project i did about a year ago for an old contest here. I don't ask for any money, i just like to get my music heard.
some old fashion zombie metal

Levels 3 and 4 were the only ones that I thought didn't fit.
