What games have you noticed where the first sequel ('X' game 2) was better than the original?

For me it was:

The Settlers II
Warcraft II
SimCity 2000
TIE Fighter (sequel to X-Wing)
Quake II

What games have you guys noticed?

Street Fighter 2 is pretty much a fact.

Thief 2: The Metal Age
Silent Hill 2
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Summoner 2
Kingdom Hearts 2
Dungeon Keeper 2
Oddworld Abe's Exxoddus (number wise Oddworld 2)
Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back
Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer

There are some more but my mind is blank to them at the moment. Unlike movie sequels which tend to never be as good as the original except for rare occasions like Terminator 2, game sequels tend to be better quite a lot if the game creators understand what needed improving like those listed above. Sadly though it still is the case that many sequels simply loose the charm of the original, Medievil 2 for example could never match the first despite being a solid game.

The main one that comes to mind for me is Rock Band 2. I liked the song selection, but mainly it was the fact that you could do Band World Tour online, unlike RB1. It was always a pain in the ass trying to get a group together at someone's house, I thought.

Fallout New Vegas had a lot of improvements, but I really loved the story in Fallout 3.

A lot of people have pictures for their signatures. But that's stupid. I'm not going to do that. That is so 2008. Not even kidding. Jeez, you guys are stoopid.

Uuuuuh..

Baldurs Gate II
Icewind Dale II (Although it was shorter due to the lack of Addons)
Super Metroid
Metal Slug 2

I noticed that most series that show vast improvement in sequels are from a more visionary era where advancing technology played a larger role in the game industry too. Nowadays we take good engines and graphics for granted and I feel the creativity of many game developers stagnates as they churn out sequel after sequel on the same modified engines.

Both games were made for very different types of people hence I think both are equally good in their respective areas.

I always have lots to say when it comes to these threads, but I always brain fart, stare at the monitor, thinking, thinking, thinking, and so, even though I have played close to 100 games in my lifetime I can only remember the following:

Time splitters future perfect

Ratchet and clank going commando

Jak 2

Sly 2

crash bandicoot 2

God this list is depressingly short. Uuuugh I know more, I know it, but I cant fucking UUUUURGH.

Pretty much just too everything and made it simpler and magnified the scope.

Are you joking?

The original is a top notch survival horror game and EA is watering down the experience with each entry.

Jak 2 in my opinion had much better platforming and controls, and driving around the city was always a mission in itself (some may not like that though). I also found the characters had more coherence, and the music in the first one was just depressing.

I think since almost every sequel that comes out is better than the original, it'd be cool to actually find originals that were better than the sequels.

Two more that people didn't mention:
- Destroy All Humans! 2
- SXX Tricky

And I agree with Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando. The original was mediocre, slow paced, and not all that fun IMO. But the second one fixed all that and made it amazing.

Jak II - Don't get me wrong, I liked Jak 1. I just prefer the darker tone, GTA4kids-style, and how weapons added up in the combat.
Hitman 2: Silent assassin - Hitman: codename 47 was pretty terrible. For it's time, it must have been advanced, but it has so many big flaws, which make it unfair, predictable, and a bit linear.
Super smash bros melee - What's there to say? Nintendo took a nicey fighting game, and maximized the fun.

i know some people say that Mass Effect 2 > 1, but in my experience it was just different (in fact i prefer ME1)

ME1:
exploration (tank) without needing DLC
not so annoying hacking
decision were more relevant
you could talk to companions during missions
combat: each power had its own cooldown, their aiming was more important and they were more varied and useful (in ME2 you had to basically kill most enemies for powers to be effective)
you could equip and use untrained weapons, which would not be very effective what adds realism
you were able to modify weapons, ammo and armor
the story makes sense

ME2:
More companions (although they dont have any relevance in the story to speak of)
NO LIARA (except for 1 crappy mission in a DLC)
the game is basically a big pack of sidequests
the story is inconsistent, short and not very interesting (in a DLC they blow up a relay)
annoying hacking (although some people might like it more)
no omnigel (liara makes a joke about that in the dlc)

ME3:
no hacking (yay)
forgetable companions (stupid meathead)
customizable weapons (better than nothing)
story? whats that?
decisions? nha, lets change your council to udina
even if you destroy every synthetic and technology in the galaxy, jokers sex-bot somehow survives

Not to mention a shortening compared to the prequel.

Uh, finishing the fight against the Reapers.

The actual problem was your decisions in ME3 doesn't really matter in the end.

even if you destroy every synthetic and technology in the galaxy, jokers sex-bot somehow survives

The original endings sucks anyway.

Prototype 2 despite not meeting the sells Activision expected. The story was interesting, the dialogue was hilarious and the gameplay was a million times better.

Thats it, thats fucking it, shut up shut up shut up. FUCKING SHUT UP. Open world =/= GTA. Fucking get that through your head RIGHT now. Jak and daxter was a series that got better every installment, Jak 3 in my opinion was the pinnacle of the Jak series.
Jak 2 was still a platformer, it still had collectables, yes it had guns, but it also had super powers, a better story, and still kept the light hearted characters of the first while adding more badass characters later. It was more compelling than the first and had a cluster fuck more to do overall alright?
It's my opinion, so fucking shut up. FUCK. >:(

Surprised Borderlands 2 only got one mention so far, I expected it to be in every other post. They improved everything that was great about the first and ditched everything that wasn't.
