If there's such a recipe for success, then it will just be a superficial success IMO.
The power of music is transcendent and is bigger than ourselves. Music can tell you a story about yourself, your woman, your relation to the world, humanity; ANYTHING. It is the expression of the human imagination. It is from your way of looking at things in life you can set up your own goals and objectives. It is from your imagination you can give a sense, a heat source to all your goals in life.
The relation between music and our imagination is not something of our invention. These myths, views and dreams come from a deep place in yourself: the subconscious. As an artist you are guaranteed to be never able reaching these fantastic dreams deep down inside if you have not built a relationship with your subconscious. The imagination of an artist has to be a living poetry in constant relation with everything concrete he does in his life. Otherwise he can't see any sense to whatever he's trying to do.
But that doesn't mean it's meant to make you a world-wide well-known type of person either. Not everyone is meant to be a huge success and everyone knows it shouldn't be that way. Everybody would end up doing what everybody else has already done to reach the same success (which would gradually kill the 'special effect' of such a superficial "success"). It would be a shame to waste your particular gifts, abilities and possibilities by doing what someone else has done.
Essentially, artists have to do what they are meant to do and care as less as possible about the demands from the "outside world". An artist will be recognized and well-known in his own right as long as he feeds his creativity through his art. Everything will come to you naturally if you do that. Life takes care of it beautifully.
It is a mix of luck and hard work. The hard work has to take place in the creation, not in the promotion.
The secret with music is to be able to catch people's hearts like fish. You will know success if your vision as an artist is able to introduce us to the world of the human imagination, the subconscious and all these beautiful places in our mind. The spiritual radiance that shines through the world, which many of us do not see; it's the job of the artist to make us see it and you bet that's what music is all about.
If you're able to provoke that change, then you have done your job and you have left your mark. Take Pink Floyd as an example.
Only an artist with a strong will truly know he'll be able to do it. It's depending of your own rhythm and tempo in life. Make your heartbeat match the beat of the universe, because being an artist is not a domain or a job; it's the nature of your own life.
"In choosing your god, you choose your way of looking at the universe. There are plenty of Gods. Choose yours. The god you worship is the god you deserve." - Joseph Campbell
