I've been contemplating the various possibilities of a zombie, and the most logical one I've come across so far is a mutated virus. The virus attaches itself to your brain cells, and the simple dna in the zombie virus allows your body to continue to function (At greatly impaired/ improved physical capabilities), while instructing it to infect another host any way possible, so that the virus may spread.
If you were to be in a cold enough location, it would ravage the virus to the point that it almost completely nulls it, and even if you were bitten/ scratched, it most likely wouldn't have the strength to get past your immune system.
Downside of it being a virus:
Each zombie could either have incredibly impaired physical capabilities, or improved physical capabilities, such as running, jumping, climbing, and having unusually heightened strength
Upside of it being a virus:
Like all viruses, it can be treated, cured, and some people might even be immune to it to begin with
