Jam Concept - Animate a Web Comic Sep. 17th, 2012 @ 04:58 PM

I was hesitant to post about this but I wanted to get feedback.

I've been thinking that for the upcoming Jam (September 28th), the theme could be to animate a strip from a specific web comic. I won't reveal which because that would give people a head start - but you likely won't guess which one. I'm talking to the creator now just to see if he'd be game.

I think it has a lot of strips that could translate well to animated form, but some of the potential pitfalls of this:

1) You wouldn't really be bringing your own art style / characters to this, although really no one can stop you from re-imagining the visuals.
2) Writers wouldn't really get involved in this jam since it's already written.
3) Need to flesh out the rights with the owner and stuff like whether people could put it on their YouTube pages or if it would just remain on NG, and if you put it on YouTube can you run ads, etc. etc.

The upsides to this:

1) You get a clear narrative and characters to work with, so you can just animate animate animate.
2) Voice actors should like it.
3) Fans of the particular web comic would see how awesome NG is.
4) Web comic gets great exposure too.

But what do YOU think? Sound like a fun concept for a 48 hour jam?

This is the game JohnnyUtah and I have been working on.

Pretty sweet idea, tom. I might try it if enough time gets on my hands.

A ready made storyboard written by a professional with permission to animate it? Count me in.

I don't like it. I think it might be too restricting and if you are forced to do another art style it may lower the overall quality of submission. I'm sure it can still come out good, but it may be more tiresome for people.

What if animators took the story of the comic and then translated it into their own art style and their own characters?

Sounds neat, depending on the source material figuring out how to handle the style in motion could be a cool challange :)

I like it. I like the restricting aspect of it even. It's supposed to be a challenge and get you out of your element anyway. Its not something I'd normally try but I'd be game for giving it a shot.

It's cool because it may give people a feel of what it's like to animate as a job. You get the script, style etc. and have to work with it.

That sounds like a lot of fun, and I am interested in participating in this Animation Jam.
I am hoping to apply as a voice actor.

I don't know....

Part of being an animator and collaborating is sharing ideas with each other and writing the story together. Keep in mind I'd probably be more for this if I had time to participate in the previous Jam...

Just my 2 cents. I'll probably be in it regardless.

I think this could still lead to people having original interpretations of the comic.
Look at the recent Garfield collab for example. That was all based off of already made Garfield comic strips, and yet each artist took their own approach to it, and everyone had their own unique spin on it.
Although they were using the pre-made characters, every piece had it's own original art style, because everyone will interpret it differently.

Yeah, I think this has the potential to be a great idea.
From my experience in this years NATA, I know that coming up with an idea and writing it down coherently can rob you of a lot of time.
As long as the comic is good n all ;p

That makes this pretty confusing though. Saying that we wouldn't really be bringing our own art style?

nah i dont much agree with this. It limits me and a comedy line or strip i can use. Plus people will over use the same comic, so idk maybe something else

This would definitely take a lot of people out of their comfort zones - even voice actors. I usually prefer to write the things I voice act for, since I can create the character and his voice from my own mind. Trying to come up with a voice that embodies someone else's creation will be very difficult.

That said, it's an excellent idea. It forces us to really work at what we're doing. I think it'll help a lot of people grow as animators and voice actors or whatever else. I like the idea, and I hope to set up a team.

Message me if you're interested.

I voice act because I'm insecure about my weight.

This is a fucking excellent idea. Not only is animating from pre-existing scripts like in webcomics great practise but it just translates well in every other way.

It's just an all round good idea that I am too tired to express how much I'd love to join in. Do it!

Restriction can be a wall to push up against; it can make you do far more interesting things thanyou would do with a blank canvas in front of you.

You ever see a film called The Five Obstructions? Think it's all on Youtube if not all online. It's just about getting a director to recreate something but with certain rules, 'obstructions' and ever since I have always been fascinated with the idea. The limitations of doing somebody elses work are pretty exciting.

I think it's pretty cool, though writers will I guess not be involved very much then?

I wanted to participate in this. It coincides with my break from university and everything, but I'm getting my wisdom teeth out on the 28th :|

Would we all be taking a page from the same comic/issue? It would be cool if enough entires were submitted to completely adapt the whole issue. Like a giant collab contributing to one story.

Everything sounded like fun until I saw this. Using a different style might get tiresome.
