I'm honestly curious here. Why do you tell people to install BackTrack Linux in your sig? It's a tool. It's meant for security testing, not daily use. Plus it's meant as a Live Medium. I understand suggesting Debian or even Arch since there for desktop use, but BT? That's just makes you look like a skiddie imo.
I use BT as security auditing tool for my job. I know skids use BT because of the amount of sectools they packed in the distro. But believe or not, BT is industry standard tool for sysadmin, pentester, netadmin and basically who has to deal with security everyday. So yeah, I think it's cool to suggest BT under there.
Arch for power use, Debian for server, BT for security, Fedora for development and Ubuntu for daily use. ;) Each has their own purpose.
I'm all for Windows.
I dual booted Ubuntu onto my computer once. The file browser was insanely slow. Slower than Windows'.
That's obviously not to say that Ubuntu's a bad alternative, it's just that it's not the best for me.
I also didn't like the side bar thing. That was legitimately wonky for me, and I just didn't like it, which is why I prefer the older versions of Ubuntu.
And I don't quite think Macs are worth it. I've never had much time with one. The asthetics are nice, but I wouldn't pay $300-$500+ more for a laptop / desktop that looks nice and runs decent over a laptop / desktop that looks decent and runs amazingly.
You can rule out the "looking nice" variable for the desktops. I could just buy a good looking monitor and case if I really wanted to.
Mmm, I've never used anything but Windows. So I guess I like Windows.

Inb4 idiots say Ubuntu transfer file slower than Windows.

Fair enough. I was just curious why. I doubt there are many people on NG who if they needed a security testing tool, would not know about it already, but I get your point.
And as for the other distros, I know their uses, and I use them as well, I was just really wondering about BT.

Here is some fact.
He could have tried it when Unity/GNOME3 Shell was still new and buggy causing Nautilus to lag. Don't really think its fair to call someone an idiot like that.

I don't understand what you're getting at.
I don't see much of a difference between using OSX and Windows 7 at the end of the day. They both run programs and browsers all the same, maybe a minor speed difference (most likely one that doesn't matter). Both look good. Are you calling me a "sad man" for not wanting a Mac? And if so, did you think I think Macs only look good?
I'm aware Macs are built with quality in mind, but I have a hard time believing that a $1k iMac is better than a $500 - $700 custom built PC for things such as running Flash, playing games, and running various other programs used for creating content. I understand exactly how much quality assurance went into the making of the Macintosh.
It's just that I don't think the quality's worth the price.
Windows, but I might use a Mac if I could afford the 'Apple tax'.

What added functionality does the Mac OS provide besides eye candy?
Mac.
Probably the best and problem-free computer/OS I've had...

Apple does hardware design very well. Apple products usually look really nice.
But that's it. The hardware is nice. The operating system is complete shit. iOS is awful.
Also, I used to be an annoying Apple fanboy that defended everything they did and now I hate Apple, and especially Macs.
IMO, Windows is 1,000 times better than Macs. But use whatever OS you want, idgaf. But fanboys are annoying. Don't be a fanboy.

I don't even have a "Smart"phone, just a regular cell phone. WITH BUTTONS.
c'mon SON
c'mon SON, Apple products are ridiculously overpriced.

yeah, metro is pretty cool. It looks dumb in that pic but if you give people the ability to customize stuff somebody is going to make something that is hard to look at. Once you get used to metro it's superior to the old start menu, imo. People just don't like change so they automatically hate it.

i would actually defend windows as an os if it wasn't for windows 8
ALL of the pcs at my school were updated to it and it's GARBAGE - point blank
there is no excuse
aesthetically it's terrible, usability actually WENT DOWN from win 7, and everything just clashes
it's so ugly you basically have to use third party customization tools to even make it bearable to LOOK AT, not to mention use
goddamn it's disgusting

I don't think it looks too bad, at least not the way I have mine. I admit it does look really shitty 90% of the time though.

That's why I won't be upgrading. Microsoft seem to be messing up with most of their new products. Same thing with the 720. Trying to take it to the next level won't work when people are satisfied with the old way of looking at things, and back on topic, I hear the regular explorer has been simplified in Win 8, power-features being phased out. Tis a shame.
Windows 7 or Mac?
The Mac, it's good for design work
WIndows 7: it's good for games.

I actually have enough sectools on Arch to just not to use BT. I use BT Live more often, although I do have a stationary BT setup in the removable HDD. BT is basically Ubuntu without the laggy GNOME, plus sectools.
I have been trying to experience with new distro lately. Basically looking for a good distro to boot on my PS3, I'm tired of Puppy Linux. Yellow Dog Linux might be the good replacement.

GNOME3 is definitely slower than other interface. Alright, I shouldn't call out other like that, I apologize. But I hate people generalize Linux. Ubuntu and its slow interface doesn't represent for Linux itself.

Why don't you try FreeBSD? It's a bit different from GNU/Linux but its still UNIX-like enough to be familar with and it wiil light on resources.

Yeah I hate it when people generalize GNU/Linux as well. The thing is Ubuntu is basically the face of Linux for alot of people. So its kinda hard for new users to not associate Linux exclusively with Ubuntu. It's kinda annoying but it can't be helped,
Anyways I recently installed Ubuntu for another person and noticed that Unity/Gnome 3 is much faster and responsive now, which is great. I still prefer Gnome 2 though.
